oled is supposed to become top of the line sporting 1,000,000:1 contrast raties which are pretty insane.

There is no way to tell yet as none of them has really hit the market yet. I know the tiny little 11" Sony OLED is for sale already, but it is not sold at any major retailers and doesn't have a consumer friendly price. So, until both of them are fully launched and have been reviewed by all the top experts in the industry, it's really hard to tell which one is better. They both have great potential. The one advantage Laser TV's may have early on against OLED TV's is that they will be launched at much greated sizes (in excess of 50"/60") whereas OLED is still in it's infancy as far as research and development is concerned and therefore will be exponentially more expensive then Laser TV's, even at much smaller screen sizes.

It has to do with the type of material used for the screen which is quite revolutionary due to its flexibility and of course with recouping the R&D costs involved in its creation.

As gvortex7 said, it is too early to tell. Neither has reached practical large screen applications in the commercial market. However, Laser stands to be the best format for very large screens. But even then, are we talking about front projection, rear projection in a vacuum chamber, etc.?

Frankly I don't really know which format would be best commercially, but a tremendous amount of information can be transmitted by lasers (color range, contrast, image detail, etc.)

No it's not. Read below:

Quote:
LASER TV is a proposed new video display technology using laser optoelectronics. Although proposed as long ago as 1966, laser illumination remained too costly and too poor in performance to viably replace lamps except in some rare ultra-high-end projectors. At the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show in 2006, Novalux Inc., developer of Necsel™ semiconductor laser technology, demonstrated their laser illumination source for projection displays and a prototype rear-projection "laser" TV. First reports on the development of a commercial Laser TV were published as early as 2006-02-16 with a decision on the large-scale availability of laser televisions expected by early 2008. On January 7, 2008, at an event associated with the Consumer Electronics Show 2008, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, a key player in the LED laser market, unveiled their first commercial Laser TV, a 65" Full HD model. First audiences who were shown reference clips from popular movies reported that they were blown away by a Laser TV's hitherto unseen color-display prowess. Some even described it as being too intense to the point of seeming artificial. These DLP-based rear-projection TVs are expected to go on sale by Black Friday 2008. For plausibility, it may be worthy to note that Mitsubishi invented the first rear-projection television and was the first to sell a complete high-definition TV system in the U.S. SYCO of China released a 120-inch Laser TV, the biggest in the world so far, and it will be used in cinema in late 2007.

One thing is almost certain barring any major setback for Sony and the future advancement of OLED as a technology, it WILL eventually replace LCD for portable devices of any kind due to its superior contrast (black level), sharpness, color reproduction, etc to LCD. But most importantly it requires no backlight which will make it the most energy efficient screen of any kind ever used in portable devices.

Yep. I believe OLED would be a lot more energy efficient than laser projection, though. There will probably be quite a weight savings for OLED as well.

Same here. When I saw photos of that 27" OLED TV at CES 2007, I was blown away. It is almost thinner then a picture that's hanging on anyone's wall. That's truly impressive. It's picture quality is also pretty much unrivaled.

I think it will be a very long time before OLED is affordable at large sizes. RP will probably be dead by then. That being said, if Mitsu can get their laser sets out the door at a decent price, I will be all over it.
