Default Have your buying habits changed since you started collecting?

This can refer to your buying habits in anyway: Perhaps you have begun to purchase Blu-rays less frequently now, or perhaps you've increased your spending. Maybe your taste in films have changed.

I noticed something today while I was in Best Buy: I have hit a wall in regard to shopping at a retail store. There are very few titles left on store shelves that I find appealing (other than the possibility of a new release I might want). I have found myself ordering online more often, not because of price, but because of selection. Considering the shopping sprees I have went on previously, I found it interesting that I could not find a single BD that I was interested in at Best Buy. I ran into this same situation at both Wal-Mart and Target a couple of days ago.

I would say my habits have remained the same (even from the VHS and DVD days). I love movies so much and I have family and friends that love movies, too, that it looks like I buy everything. I would say the only thing that has changed is the fact that I'm not impulsive as I was because I know now that prices do lower quicker than I thought.

Yes, and no. I started collecting DVDs, so when Blu-rays first came along I slowly started buying them instead of DVDs, even though I hadn't bought a new HDTV yet but had a PS3. Only bought new stuff at first, but eventually started double dipping, depending on how much I loved the movie and the price. I've slowed down quite a bit, I've only bought two this year. I imagine I'll still buy more as they are released, but am at the point storage rise where I'm pushing it. There are still plenty of titles I'd love to have as part as my collection. Not only do I still enjoy the collecting aspect of it, I enjoy being able to watch what I want to watch when I want to watch it.

To chart my collecting timeline - I started Boxing Week 2009. In 2010, I only had about a dozen since I waited to get a player midway, then started building my library. From 2011-2012, I was frequently buying a title or two a week in-store. With two memorable boxing day experiences. In 2013, I let myself off the chain and started buying online like crazy for many reasons, but that would be another paragraph in itself.

Now in 2014, I've reached the point. I'm happy with what I have. There's only a few movies I would want to obtain, I can stream the one-and-done movies. Pretty much just keeping an eye out on new releases. Now focusing my ambitions on other endevours.

When I started collecting blu-rays, I started buying fewer and fewer movies, basically just buying the truly great ones that I'd watch a lot. When I was buying DVDs, I'd buy a lot of good-but-not-great movies that I'd watch maybe once. No more.

It's not really because blu-rays are more expensive - they're not a whole lot more costly than DVDs. I guess I just think since this is a premium format that I ought to focus on really special titles and not waste time or money on borderline titles.

I've slowed down quite a bit compared to last year, sometimes it's just time to watch those blind buys and enjoy.

Also i just mainly shop online because i can't find the titles i want at retail, as well as import those titles not in the states because i have no patience.

My buying habits have changed drastically. I love the feeling of having THAT movie that I am in the mood to watch. I think it's possibly only going to get worse as time passes, only because they just keep pushing out these great releases and there is no way I can keep up. Damn, if I am not tryin

I've only really been collecting for about a year-and-a-half now and my spending has definitely increased. It stayed at a decent rate until Black Friday when I just bought so much stuff and it really hasn't slowed down. And like you, I've slowed my spending at retail places like Best Buy, Target (my work), Wal-Mart, etc. And instead, I've increased my buying on Best Buy's site, Hastings, Deep Discount, WB Shop, Amazon and so on. But needless to say, my spending's increased. Probably around half of my collection has been added since November, if that says anything. Hell, I got 14 packages in the mail yesterday, the most I've ever gotten but that shows all the money I've been spending. Damn movies and their stranglehold over me.

So yeeeeeeah, I have a problem. Damnit.

I mainly just have an addiction problem with everything. I collected sports memorabilia in my early teen's and that lasted for a while until I delved into drugs, which lasted for almost seven years. I got sober and I've been collecting movies virtually ever since I hit sobriety. Guess I got an addictive personality.

Thumbs up

I didn't really start "collecting" until I found this site, but since then my habits have absolutely changed. I used to buy new movies at whatever price the store wanted ($20-$25) because I didn't know you could get them cheaper even in the first week of release (now I go for the $13 ones). I've also started to wait for older movies to come on sale instead of just picking them up for whatever price and moreover my snap buy/sweet spot price has changed from $8 to $5. I still can't believe I got to 500 blu-rays without ever buying any that were less than $7.88. I feel dumb, but more than anything I am just grateful to have finally signed up here. I check in on the site every day for the new Amazon price changes and that has slowed down a lot of my aimless shopping at retail stores.

I never liked buying online. I don't have any patience, but, as the selection at Best Buy and Target and Walmart gets smaller and smaller I find myself buying much more online. The only thing local that offers me anything is Vintage Stock, they get the new Scream titles and some off beat stuff no one else will sell, plus there is usually something cool in the used section. Also, Half Price Books doesn't have a very large selection but once in a while a few gems pop up. I also told myself in the beginning that I would never buy any movie on blu-ray unless it was new because there was no way older movies would look any better on blu. Well it was a pleasant surprise when I discovered that I was wrong. Some old favorites look even better then I remember them when they first came out. I spend way to much on movies, but they are my only vice and everyone needs a hobby.

I use to buy a lot of VHS and DVDs when I was very young. As Blu-rays became the highest demand, I stopped buying DVDs and upgraded to Blu. But now it's like I have to buy every single movie that gets re-released onto Blu-ray, and some movies I don't regret doing it but not all movies. I use to buy a lot at Circuit City, but that's because Circuit City was a 10 minute walk away from where I live. But when they ran out of business, I had no choice but to go to Best Buy and that was a long trip ahead.

Now, I can have the choice to stream a lot of movies on Netflix or rent them. I still buy Blu-rays and if I want to buy one, I would usually get it off Amazon and have it shipped to my house. I don't like shopping for movies in store, I just get everything from home. And most of the time when I buy DVDs or Blu-rays I usually buy a lot of action movies or animation movies.

So yes and no my buying habits changed. I still buy Blu-rays if I really like the movie, but I prefer buying them online. I only go to Best Buy if I was traveling in the next day or so.

My impulse buying has dropped off big time, and I blame Amazon collecting sales tax!

For the most part my BD buying habits have remained the same since I started in June of 2008. The only thing I have changed since the beginning is I make sure to get Disney's classic and animated titles on release week in a store because they are usually the cheapest then and you're guaranteed to get a slipcover in good shape.

Since I started collecting Blu-rays, I've focused my efforts toward older movies from the 1920s through 1950s.

One of the first things I noticed when I made the jump to a high definition television and a Blu-ray player was that old movies do not look like "old movies" in high definition. Since so many old black-and-white and Technicolor movies look as though they were filmed yesterday when viewed on Blu-ray, I've rediscovered the wonders of cinema from the early days.
