how is PS3 slim's blu-ray playback? - Blu-ray Forum

the last PS3 I had gave a very noisy blu-ray playback. while my LGBH player gives a very smooth one. I think I might have had a defective unit. I am thinking of getting PS3 slim, is the blu-ray quality / playback good? To those with multiple players, is it any difference in video quality?

I love mine and been using my Slim PS3 for my movies lately but haven't done a comparison but will say no disappointment that I can think of so far.

The differences are minimal. I went from a Pioneer BDP-51FD to a PS3 slim, and the quality of picture on playback is comparable. The Pioneer had a slight advantage in color, but that may have been video processing in the unit itself. I rather enjoy the playback of the PS3 though, and the speed is a fantastic step up from my last player.

The only problem I'm having is with the HDMI handshake between the PS3 and my Pioneer receiver. I sometimes have to press pause, then play numerous times to get the handshake for the bitstreamed audio. Not a major problem, and one that I hope is addressed in the next PS3 firmware update, but one that you should be aware of.

i haven't noticed any difference in picture quality only real 2 big differences is the fan is totally different and more quiet and also it can bitstream dts-hd master and the fat one cant.

Just an update to this thread. It seems with firmware 3.10, Sony has addressed this problem. I just downloaded the new firmware, and tried out a few movies (A Bugs' Life, Serenity, IronMan), and had no audio problems. The audio started at the beginning, and came back after each pause. Thanks Sony!

This makes the 3rd report I've seen of this problem beind addressed. I'm really glad to hear they took care of it since I'm planning to make the move to a PS3 slim after the first of the year.

Since we are talking about sound...why is it when I put in a new release Blu in my PS3, the sound is not sinced with the image. Feels like an old Kung-Fu movie.

If you're having syncing problems, that usually indicates the AVR. If you're going straight from the PS3 to the TV, there should be no syncing problems. But some AVR's have a feature in them that delays the video out to sync up with the audio.

I was thinking the same thing. Find the syncing feature in your receiver and play with it some until you're satisfied with the results.

It's straight to the TV. I just eject the disc, put it back in and it's fine.
