The Gaumont.fr pre-order is up and it shows it will have English subs...

Now if they would just confirm that for A Man Escaped...

so I guess it is actually Gaumont releasing this then--
not Paramount.
I mean obviously both companies aren't releasing it right?
Gaumont is easily the most English/region A friendly studio in France imo.

Being resurrected after 9 years of silence!

I just received the disc yesterday and had a short glimpse of it last night. I'll be watching the full movie tonight.

I am fascinated by this historical period relating to France. I've got:

Les Miserables, 1934 movie, 1998 movie & 2000 TV Series
All the Mornings of the World
Count of Monte Cristo, 1998 TV Series
Cyrano De Bergerac, 1990
Death of Louis XIV, 2016
Three & Four Musketeers, 1973 (truly awful)
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, 2006
War & Pearce, 1956 (also awful)
Waterloo, 1970 Bondarchuk epic
Master & Commander, 2008

Any recommendations on movies covering France of this period?

A Tale of Two Cities is already on my buy list . . .

Other than War and Peace + Valmont, I had no ideas about the others so thank you!

Ah, also remembered B&W 'The Man Who Laughs' and more recent French version 'L'Homme qui rit'.

There is of course the Sofia Coppola film, Marie Antoinette. From what I understand, the bare bones Australian release is the one to get:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Marie...lu-ray/194659/

The US release has some extras, but is unfortunately a BD-R, and I would definitely prioritize reliability. There is also an older French release which has VC-1 encoding and forced French subtitles.

Then there is the 1988 movie Dangerous Liaisons:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dange...Blu-ray/31237/

In terms of lesser known releases, there is the 2002 mini-series Napoleon, available in Germany:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Napoleon-Blu-ray/179959/

Amazon.de states that it has English audio.

There is also the 2-part movie La Révolution française, made in 1989 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the French revolution. Unfortunately, it's not released on blu ray anywhere, and is only available on DVD:

Historically, it is more accurate than Danton, but artistically, it's nowhere near as good. I don't know if there is a release anywhere in the world that has English subtitles. The French DVD above neither has English audio nor English subtitles.

By the way GRD43L, when did you buy your blu ray of Danton? I'm interested because the first Danton blu rays were pressed by the QOL plant in France, which is notorious for constantly making discs that die. I would really like to know if the disc you have is a newer one that isn't pressed by QOL. Is it possible that you post the tiny IFPI numbers that are close to the hub of the disc? It would be really nice to know that I can safely order a new disc if my disc dies, which it probably will.

Thank you for the recommendations.

Marie Antoinette, I also have on my list of movies to buy. I already have Dangerous Liaisons (great movie).

Napoleon and the French Revolution, I am very interested in.

I got Danton BD last week. I'll look for the IFPI number near the disc hub.

Thanks, and please let me know if you can see the letters "QOL BD" in the circle around the hub. And if the color around the center of the hub is pure and white, or if it has some brownish color.

This is what I saw on the hub of the disc:

2 rings of: QOL BD - DANTON L1 00422BB00040

Inner ring looks silverish; outer ring also has barcode and is different darker colour, hard to tell since the whole surface is highly reflective.

From the inner ring to the hole is much lighter colour.

I see, thank you. Did you buy it recently off Amazon.fr? Or did you get it somewhere else? I guess we'll just have to hope that Danton is one of the QOL discs that won't die any time soon. By the way, I just thought of another movie that you might be interested in, Ridley Scott's The Duellists:

It's OOP, but you might be able to find it on eBay for a decent price.

I bought it through a seller (7th Art) in Amazon.ca couple of months ago. It took good 4 wks for delivery so it could very well have been from France.

I've never even heard of Ridley Scott's Duellist so I'll keep my eyes open for it.

Nobody has mentioned the brilliant Un Peuple et Son Roi which came out last year and is for me the best film set in the Revolution to date as it features not only actors playing the famous names of the right age and appearance but also follows the impact on a family of ordinary folk. Saw it twice in the cinema and have watched it agin on Blu Ray. For some reason the Blu Ray is only available in France!
I thought Danton got the atmosphere right and the period detail, also the fact that Danton was shown as the corrupt man he became, but Depardieu and Patrice Chereau apart, disliked much of the casting, especially Robespierre and Saint Just.
