it is really simple actually. Look in the manual and you will see that it is even supported by Sony, it does not void the warranty. (http://ps3.qj.net/Clearing-up-the-PS...g/49/aid/72554)

Here's one tutorial on how to do it (http://www.overclock.net/playstation...rive-swap.html)

You can actually take an external HDD with a USB port, connect it and format it, and backup all your data to it.
Then swap the internal drive with a new internal (the size of a laptop HDD) and it will (or should) recognize it. It will ask you to format the disk. Once you do, transfer all your files from the external drive back onto your PS3.

Hmm.. that is strange. I haven't tried it yet myself but I was planning to later this year.
I remember reading about a specific one but I don't remember where I saw it.
Perhaps there is something wrong with the drive, or it is in a format already and the PS3 doesn't want to use it.
If you know how to use a HDD case/enclosure kit, you can potetially use the same drive currently inside the PS3, hook it up to the enclosure, but make sure it has USB, and use it to tranfer everything onto the new drive.
You can find the enclosures at tigerdirect.com or newegg.com
I have made the enclosures before but not with that size ddrive, I assume it would work the same.
Good Luck.

To make the backup, the external drive/flashdrive MUST BE in FAT32. So if you have a flashdrive big enough to handle it, use that.

I understood that to simply pull that off i need to use an external flashdrive, and its got to be FAT 32. my only problem is my PS3 isn't recognizing it. it shows a usb is plugged in but i can't even access it. is it supposed to be doing that. or all i have to do is simply transfer my files to it, and when connect the new HDD save my files on it.
