Default Up & Monster's Inc. 6.1 Dts-MA

Both Up and Monster's Inc. Have 6.1 DTS master audio so why do they only advertise 5.1? They both sound fantastic!!!

While the primary audio tracks initially appear to be DTS-HD MA 6.1 surround mixes, the actual tracks are 5.1 channel mixes (as the back covers and main menus state). The additional channel for each track is matrixed into the right and left surrounds, creating the illusion of a 6.1 mix. However, in each case, the additional channel isn't a discrete channel, meaning the mixes aren't true 6.1 tracks.

Hope that helps clarify things. Thanks as always for posting!

Showed 5.1 for me and that is also the only option in the audio menu, there is no option for 6.1.

Is this be something your receiver would do or is it something that a newer receiver just knows how to handle after the PS3 does it in the decode? Reason I ask is the PS3 pop up menu says 6.1 and my receiver runs in "pure direct" at all times.

Just curious.

If you are running PCM out from the PS3 then it is your player making the 6.1 decision for you. All your receiver sees is 6.1 LPCM. If you bitstream from a newer PS3, then your receiver will handle the DTS-HD MA track however it has been set up to handle it.

Thanks for the info.

I am running PCM out of the PS3. How does the PS3 know to matrix into 6.1 if the audio track is only 5.1? Is that what the ES Matrix (some type of flag in the track) in the review is referring to, although it is not listed on the package?

Yup, it's simply flagged for the PS3 to detect the extra channel.

If you're running a 6.1/7.1 set up and you're only getting a 5.1 audio track, simply enable EX/ES on your receiver manually and you'll get the exact same effect.

I think Wall E and a few other Disney titles are encoded the same way.

Yeah the package says 5.1 and in the audio menu for UP it says master audio ES but in the audio menu for Monster's Inc. It just says 5.1 master audio but reads 6.1 master audio when i press info on the ps3. Its sounds good either way though

Default Monsters, Inc. Audio 6.1 DTSHD

Sorry if I missed something in the thread but I did a search and couldn't find anything on this.

The director states on the blu-ray that the movie is in 5.1 DTSHD. The box even says it. When I play on PS3 Slim it is in 6.1 DTSHD... Anyone else have this going on?

It is a printing error on Disney's behalf i believe. The DTS-HD MA track does in fact read as a 6.1 track. It is a printing error on the UK and US Discs.

I Believe the '6' part of the track is matrixed in. So, it is not a true 6.1 mix.

No, it's not. Ken Brown explained it succinctly just a few posts above.
