need some advice on a couple christmas presents this year:
1. my uncle is looking for a htib and after a little bit of research, it seems like the onkyo 6100/6200 fit the bill nicely...is there anything else in that price range i should be looking at? 2. i am looking to slowly get my setup going and have decided to start with the receiver and front two speakers...i have $500-$600 to play with and thought about getting an onkyo 607 and the monitor 30/40s (which do you recommend?) i am looking for the most bang for my buck...as this will be my first receiver, any help would be greatly appreciated Last edited by Beta Man; 12-09-2009 at 11:05 PM. |

2. Its a good start. Do look at the Onkyo HT-RC160 too. Essentially the same minus Sirius, and a front HDMI. If you can push your budget up a bit, http://www.accessories4less.com sells refurbed Marantz SR5003 for around $500, which would have better sound, more power, more flexibility in terms of future expansion. For the speakers, Polks are liked a lot here. As are Klipsch, Energy etc too. Do go out and listen to them, you might prefer a different sound ![]() Good Luck |

1. if i wanted to go one step down ($300-$400)...what would you recommend for a htib? 2. that marantz looks nice, but the ocd in me feels better with a new one and only 3 hmdi inputs is a dealbreaker for me...im really liking that rc160! |

For an HTiB, you DON'T want to go a step down from the Onkyo HT-S6100/6200. You'll lose too much functionality. Anything any lower will not have HDMI switching. In other words, you'll have to use 2 cables - one for video and one for audio for EVERY component you try to hook into the receiver. You'll also lose lossless audio decoding. You'll lose power. The speakers will be worse. You'll lose some, if not ALL, HDMI inputs. It's just not worth it to save a couple of dollars and lose all of the goodies included in the 6100/6200. If you do go any lower, someone will wind up being frustrated and unhappy.
