Default Home Theater magazine good for newbs to learn.

Hi folks. Just starting to get into home theater and such and I was wondering if there was a good magazine out there to read about HT stuff. Thanks.

Well there is Home Theater Magazine and Sound & Vision. Those are pretty good. Look em up online and you can also subscribe online too.

I find that Home Theater Mag explains things in a little easier to understand way. Sound and Vision, while a great magazine, is a little more scientific in explanations. However, I do subscribe to both.

I recently picked up an issue of each. Even though I've been passionate about HT since 1999,... these mags still help inspire me to keep my interest up.

I love forums like this one and others like AVSForum and so on. (Actually this is the only one I read now but I used to go to many of them.) You can get a lot of great information for the web boards whereas the magazines have more gear reviews.

Still... you can learn from gear reviews even if you don't ever come into contact that that particular gear.

Also there is "Electronic House" and "Home Theater Magazine".
I get them all, and the reviews have been a great help in building my theater.
My one issue is the profusion of ridicuslously priced theaters.
I feel they should devote more space to us amateurs.
Also, is ir just me, or are the fonts shrinking in all these mags? Maybe I just need new glasses!

One thing I did was purchase old copies of Stereo Review and others from EBay. I find it helps to learn where we came from to get to this point.

Also, read everything you can find on the net. Just remember there is a lot of bad information out there. Don't assume that you can get the answers from one site. Read many and the it become apparent which sites are sales sites and which ones are hobbyist.

I've been reading Sound & Vision since it was Stereo Review in the 70s. I lost my collection of back issues during my last move. I've been looking for an article (review of my speakers) in the September 2003 Sound & Vision magazine for a couple of years now and have not been able to find it. I have not received answers to my requests to the magazine website. I would really appreciate it if anyone who has it could scan that review and E-mail it to me.

Have you checked the library?

I may have that issue. I will have to look downstairs when I get a chance....

i can definitely vouch for sound and vision magazine as a good resource if you want to learn more depth in regards to audio visual concerns. only one i can endorse.

on the other hand, id also consider forums to be a more 'realistic' source of information. we've had a number of participants here, and at certain occasions, others, that can further assist you on any questions you may have.

if you hesitate, you can always end up pm'ing any one of us here too. albeit i like to tell people who do, to try to post it in the public forum so everyone can learn from it as well.

we are all teachers and students at one point or another.

Thanks Dave, I would really appreciate that. Yes I did look at the local library but it is a small town library.

And if you really want to read the hard stuff there is also Widescreen Review. It has been around since the Laserdisc days. Extremely technical but has a nice review section for Blurays.
