i'm looking at getting a panasonic plasma on a budget around 6-7 hundred, the cheaper the better. just looking for the best bang for the buck.
i'm just wondering how older models compare to new models. are used plasmas worth a look? i have someone selling a th-42pz77u asking 750 locally. even if i can get that down to 600 and everything is perfect, is it worth it. or should i just buy a newer model. i'm really confused, a little help would be nice. |

Here is a great deal on the Panny 50" X1 plasma for $699: http://www.electronics-expo.com/make...TCP50X1/1.html. Here is the Panny 42" X1 plasma for $652: http://www.electronics-expo.com/make...TCP42X1/1.html Given the $47 difference in price, I would go for the 50".

The S1 has the NeoPDP panel and is 1080p. The 720p X1 with the 360 for the same price is a sweet deal though. I would probably go with that. Just depends on how much you game and if you want/need 1080p.

At these prices i would go new, theres some nice upgrades each year like lower power consumption, less glare, shinier casing, etc. Plus you don't know for sure how well the owner treated the tv, they could of watched things super bright and always paused still images on etc

Did the OP mention where the tv will be used? I went the 42X1 route from Best Buy and it's perfect for our bedroom. If it's going in the living room, splurge for the 50" or bigger. Plus, maybe the sells will be back around Christmas. Around Thanksgiving I got my X1 for $550 at Best Buy!

Might as well throw in my .02 on this one...
A few months back I picked up a 42" Samsung PN42B450 720p for the bedroom. The viewing distance is approx 7feet. One of my concerns was the 720 vs 1080. And after playing some BD's and PS3 games on this little sucker I think it's a killer unit for the $700(cdn) i paid, most likely a lot lower in the USA. The PQ is really nice, pretty impressive actually. Putting it in Movie mode and tweaking the settings made a sweet difference. I've got about 50-65hrs on it and i've been watching a lot of TV with station logo's and I haven't spoted any IR yet! So yeah, this little dude is pretty impressive. You can view it in my gallery. For a big budget set the Panasonic X1 is a no-brainer. The S1 is a nice set, but you are actually getting a lesser picture than you would with the X1. Sure, the S1 is 1080p, but the color accuracy is nothing special and the black level is not nearly as good as the X1. The X1 has blacks that match the G10 and even though its 768p its still a superior picture to the S1 IMO.
I've viewed these sets side by side many times and the X1 is just much better. At 50" and below 1080p really isn't much of a difference unless you sit real close....say around 4ft. Any further away you will be hard pressed to see the difference. With the 50" X1 going for around $700-$800 these days its an excellent choice. |

use the sears card and get an extra 8% off...staying in your budget...theres no better deal than this...you can usually get the 50s1 for ~$900-$950 but if you dont want to pay for the upgrade to 1080p then the x1 is great

im looking to upgrade my tv as well in the near future and i get really confused on the models too. i think im gonna go with panasonic cuz everyone seems to act like they are the best for the buck, but which models are the good models? as in order.. is the x series the lowest or the s series or the g series. its so confusing... i dont want to miss out on something by going a couple hundred cheaper. i want to make sure i get a very good set. im looking to go up to 50" and it definitely has to be 1080p. i have a 42" insignia 1080p right now and im looking to move to plasma. i dont really have a price range but obviously the cheaper the better. i definitely dont want to be spending a couple thousand or anything..
