Default The Wife Has Agreed...

The wife has agreed to upgrade our current Onkyo 605 but to which one? The three choices I have come down to are Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, Marantz SR6003, or Integra 30.1. The reason for these 3 choices is that they all have pre-out for a possible future upgrade to a separate amplifier. I have heard the Pioneer and like the look and sound of it. Marantz was the receiver used when I was sold on and ended up getting my Paradigm Monitor 7’s and CC290 speakers. I have never heard an Integra but I know that they are part of the Onkyo company. I like the fact that the Integra is 7.2 (future 2nd sub) instead of 7.1 but other than that they are really close spec wise. I can get the Integra for approx $725 so price wise they are also very close. Now this is where I need your help, does one of these have an advantage or disadvantage (video or audio) over the others or are they really all going to be the same?

They are all going to have different audio characteristics, and if you're looking "Long term" and planning on adding separate amplification, don't concern yourself with the wattage output that they "Claim" (it's often not very relevant anyways)

I'm a big fan of Rotel, Marantz, and NAD.

Besides what Beta Man suggested, these receivers also process sound differently, and thus can sound differently. You said you liked the sound of the Pioneer, but have you listened to the other 2 yet? The 3 receivers you picked are very comparable, so if price is not a huge factor, I would make sure you give a listen to all 3 and let your ears decide this for you.

Of the three you listed I would personally go with the Pioneer or Marantz. And don't worry about the 7.2 vs. 7.1 issue. All you need is a $3 'Y' splitter to run two subwoofers from any receiver with only one sub connection.

I'm a little biased towards Marantz but must point out I loved my Pioneer when I had it. Just a quick check and I noticed that the sr6003 also has 2 HDMI outs which may come in handy as well for 2 displays. Have no experience with Integra but being affiliated with Onkyo I wonder if they suffer from the same heat issues...

I'm sure you will be happy with any of the receivers listed - My Paradigms love the Marantz and Rotel combo so my vote is for the Marantz

All good choices and either way you will be getting a great quality product. I would like to however sway you into the Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH. Why? Well I just got mine and it's great ! I still can't believe how awesome it is.

I've been an NAD fan since the early '80's. I'm running a T762 in my home theater and it sounds great. Unfortunately, no HDMI, no Audyssey and it's 5.1, not 7.1.

Picked up the Pioneer VSX-23TXH because BB had their free upgrade deal going on (Buy the VSX-21TXH and upgrade to the VSX-23TXH for free). What a huge difference this thing has made in the 2 days I have had it. I am keeping the 605 for a while at least but the Pioneer has made a believer out of me!

Congrats on the new Pioneer. Was looking at getting one myself a little while back, but I got the Yamaha RX-V765 for $399 and at that price it's unbeatable.
