Default What does BB do with a broke PS3? Need Help

Sorry if this isn't quite the right forum. My ps3 died in April and I took it to bestbuy because it was still under warranty and they gave me a new one with no hassle. Yesterday ago I saw that my old psn name that I haven't used in almost two months had a last sign in of a few hours ago. I thought to myself I must have rolled over on the bd remote when I was sleeping, its happened before. However, last night I saw my old psn sign on while I was on my new psn. I thought that someone one must have hacked my old account somehow. Then over the next few minutes I saw my brothers psn sign on and off. And my cousin's psn sign on and off. I called them and neither of them were on. All of our accounts were on that broke ps3, this was back when neither of them had a ps3 and use to come over and play. Because the ps3 broke and wouldn't turn on, I couldn't delete our accounts from that ps3 before I returned it. So I'm thinking that Bestbuy must've fixed it and sold it as refurbished? The only thing that concerns me is that I had my cc info attached to my old account. This person could potentially have my cc info, if I went to bestbuy would they know what happened to this ps3? I'm just pretty shocked that they would sell a refurbished ps3 that wasn't restored to factory conditions.

I did that already and changed my password. But this person had access to my account for over a day before I noticed.

Not sure if there the same, but even after I've put a credit card in my 360, it will only show the last 4 digits in the Hard drive...If Sony does the same thing to protect you information it should help,

While someone may of been able to say buy a movie or download something on the ps3 with your card, they wouldn't of been able to go on Amazon and buy a Kuro, or even a blu ray...

Well as long as you got the CC info off there, and there were no charges on your card, then you should be okay.

That is scary though. I bought my first PS3 on Ebay and when I got it the dude had left his CC info and his account on there. I deleted it and then emailed him and let him know that.

I'm going to the bank first thing in the morning and getting a different checking card and seeing if there have been any transactions. I'm not sure if I'll make a trip to bestbuy, although I am curious as to how this happened.

Call PSN customer service ASAP, they can deactivate your account (and your brother's and cousin's accounts) remotely.

Info may need for all accounts:
PSN ID
e-mail addy associated with PSN account
DOB associated with PSN account

Customer service reps at most companies aren't allowed to ask for passwords, but have them too, just in case.

Yeah, thats why I don't give them my info, I always go out to walmart and buy the PSN cards, if I ever have to send it in for service, or someone breaks in, I'm guessing the PS3 would be one of the first things they grab

I'd never use a check/debit card with any online service. With a regular credit card, you get the opportunity to dispute a transaction and possibly get a chargeback. With a debit card they get your money right away.

I do have my CC saved on my account, but there is an option you can set so that whenever you make a purchase you HAVE to enter your password. I do this simply so I can't make a purchase by mistake (or when my relatives come over and mess with my PS3).

Just going to reiterate that they don't have your credit card #...they have a stored number that works on PSN.

While they could charge a bunch of stuff from PSN to your card, they don't have the information required to say, go buy a 4000$ tv with it.

And since it emails you every time funds get added to your wallet, you should know quickly.

Still sucks though. If BB is going to refurb and sell (which they do, I've seen stacks of them here) they need to wipe the old account info before sale.

If Sony charges a tax on PSN purchases for your state, then the stores selling PS cards should not be collecting a tax on PSN card purchases.

Some states collect the tax when you cash in your card, but not when you buy it (most common).

Some states collect a tax when you buy the card, but not when you cash it in (less common).

Some states don't collect tax on either (least common).

No states should be collecting tax on both.

I had my PS3 recently do the old YLOD thingie and I had no chance to "deactivate" it.

It was exchanged with Sony and they said that they can remotely deactivate all the systems for my account but only once so I should wait till I have more than 5 PS3s activated which will likely never happen anyway.

So..., I have to wonder what happens if who ever now owns my old PS3 (assuming they fix it which I think they will) goes and tries to download stuff that bought off PSN. I think the stuff I bought should show up with the little red shopping bag meaning it's been activated for the system.

Makes me wonder if anything was activated by the previous owner of my system.

Oh well.... I'm sure I don't fully understand the activation stuff.

Even if they did purchase something it would be fraud. And seeing as the PS3 has to be connected to the internet to download stuff it would be traceable. Not that it helps immediately, but you would get your money back.

And seeing as this is America, you'd probably be able to sue some money out of BestBuy for the whole fiasco.

Ive never heard of paying taxes on PSN. So the PSN actually charges taxes on purchases. I live in California and Id only have to pay taxes if I went and bought a PSN card at a Store, If I make my purchases accross the network I dont pay taxes. With how heavy handed they are with the taxes here in California ( my county is 9.5% sales tax, my city is 9.75%) I am suprised that I would not pay taxes on something that others else where are.
