Default What Makes Blu-rays So Collectible?

Maybe I'm alone here, but I have become a much more avid collector of movies/tv series since I started watching blu-rays. I already have more blu-rays than I ever had DVDs (and that's not even that many), and I find myself looking forward to new releases like I never did before.

Some of you "older" members might have already felt the same way about collecting DVDs, so you may disagree that there's anything special about blu-rays in particular...

But if you find yourself a new movie-collector with blu-rays, why do you think that is? Something as simple as attractive packaging? Is it a matter of the quality finally being high enough that you feel compelled to start buying movies?

As I think about it writing this post, I'm wondering if it's not HD technology in general that has attracted me to the medium...

Each blu-ray has a hidden subliminal message built in so you buy more blu-rays.

I'm willing to bet you weren't in a position to collect DVDs in the late 90's...... had you been, you would have seen all of the releases that came out, known what ones went OOP, etc....

I'm guessing the reason you're now "Hooked" on movie collecting, doesn't have anything to do with any difference between Blu-rays or DVDs in terms of technical merits, cases, etc. etc.... I'm guessing it's because you were here from the ground-level up...... You don't see a movie on T.V. and say "hey, I wonder if that is on Blu-ray..." because you probably already know if it is or not.......

You probably have a good idea of the transfer of movies that you haven't seen yet, because whether you were highly interested in the film or not, you probably stumbled across a conversation or two about it already.......

Blu-ray is your "tree" you've seen it grown from seed.......

For me the audio is lossless. And 4k video is unnecessary for displays in the 100" or smaller arena. I also have a feeling that blu Ray will be the last optical media, maybe even physical

I like buying movies because in like 20 years you might say "hey honey remeber those movies with Hmmm Brad Pitt" she would be like "yeah let's watch them" - lol. I think it would be cool to have down the road. So I might as well get them while they are cheap - lol

I buy them because I believe they are the best "tangible" piece of media we will ever get. I like owning a piece of something.

I don't know. Before blu, I owned probably 500 VHS, almost 400 Laserdiscs, and close to 1500 DVDs. I have close to 400 blus now, but I don't see them as being any more collectible than the last format. They are just progressively getting better.

Interesting...two of you have said that you think it might be the last form of "optical/physical media". Never thought of that, but I suppose it's a very real possibility...maybe I have a new reason to collect them now!

For me I just like collecting movies that I like and the best quality. Yes, started with VHS then got rid of them then into DVD's up to the point of collecting several editions or upgraded features of a single movie either importing it or buying locally, basically double dipping and now blu-rays...when i started buying blurays i said to myself i'll just collect the old ones I have on dvd that I REALLY like and just settle with dv copies for the other movies but hey look at me now, double dipping, and prices of some so cheaply tempting that even Swordfish and daredevil got upgraded to blu, and hey I have to deal with the wife too for of course it is costly...but collecting is satisfying, just getting hold of a copy on day one, sweet!

I used to buy CD's all the time, and I stopped. I didn't buy much DVD's, and when I bought my PS3 I just started buying BD's.

Hello my name is Elvis and I am a recovering addict.

At one point I had 4,386 DVD's in 2005. Then I hit bottom! I was always a movie nut but then I was forced to seek recovery. It not only became a collecting habit was all about the deal! The best deal! What i could get the dvd's for. It didnt matter if I liked the film all that well or not.....I was addicted! I could walk in to say Office Depot when The 2 disc Fight Club first came out and with price matching and coupons walked out of the store paying only 2.50 for a brand new 2 disc special edition film. A few friend and I racked up movies like you wouldnt believe.....I cant remember the deal but if you filled out a survey in 1998 you got three free DVD's.......I think I had 20 addresses I sent them too. Had to have a real address and everyone I knew was on my list. We didnt break the law but we sure used every loophole you could find....

I am recovering because I am being more selective in my purchases now.....as you can see I have only bought 110 dics in one year and I hope to never exceed 300 again...EVER!

Iam a movie collector rather than a blu-ray fanatic. I had 100's of dvds before I started selling them. Its only logical to make the switch to blu as it is the latest in movie watching technology.

Thanks for that very thoughtful and thought-provoking answer - I think there could be some truth there (for me, anyway, and I suspect a lot of others as well), and I like the idea that it isn't simply rooted in commercialism. And you're right that I wasn't anywhere near the ground floor of DVDs - they just weren't on my radar when they first came out and I was a late convertor for sure (started watching them on a DVD-ROM in my computer). I'm more one of the "pioneers" in this medium...

I started collected music as a kid. I have always enjoyed movies, but I didn't feel the previous formats were collection worthy. DVD was close, and was the first format I purchased any movies on; but even then I only collected what I considered my absolute favourite must have movies. When Blu-ray was introduced, I knew from the specs alone that it was going to be a watershed event. The PQ finally exceeded human visual acuity for a reasonable home theatre environment, and lossless audio is just that. In the past three years I have collected six times as many BDs as I have ever owned on DVD, and I'm not looking back.

And this is pretty much where I thought I was too, but I like the point Beta Man made as an additional factor in the equation.

Primarily, I collect only if the Blu is a movie I want to see or know I will enjoy purchasing. Second, its about the supplements. When a Blu comes out with a new kind of technology or feature (say, Watchmen's Maximum Movie Mode), I'm really interested in seeing what it has to offer. Its not that I like collecting Blus because they are Blus. Its just that I enjoy seeing my collection expand with each new valuable release.
