Question Onkyo HT 6200 w/PS3 (similar, but different issues as 6100 thread)

I just went through this thread here:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=114915

re: the Onkyo HT 6100 and issues with the PS3 and in the OP's case, his DVR. I don't have any issues with my Divver, but I do have similar issues and questions re: using my 6200 (which from what I can tell is close but not exactly the same as the 6100). I've started this separate thread because I don't want to hijack the other thread and because I need some clarification that doesn't seem to apply to the 6100.

My biggest concern was addressed rather early on and that was the issue of why there is no indication on the receiver as to Dolby TruHD and it was explained that you won't see it on the receiver and that you should be able to see it on-screen by pressing the select button on the remote/PS3 controller (i.e., display) and it should indicate Dolby TrueHD. Well, the problem I have is that mine isn't doing that and I can't figure out why. My PS3 (BTW: it's a 60 GB that I purchased in December of 2007 with the most current firmware update, if that makes a difference) indicates:

Dolby Digital Multi-Channel 48 kHz 640 kbps

EDIT: OK, I figured out why I was only getting Dolby Digital instead of TrueHD: my "Audio Output Format" was set to Bitstream and not Linear PCM. Problem solved with that but it leads me to to two more questions:

1.) Should I set the "Dynamic Range Control" in the PS3 to "Automatic," "On," or "Off?" It defaults to "Automatic" and quite frankly, I don't even know what this is for so if someone can provide some advice as to the setting for this and explain what DRC is for, it would be greatly appreciated.

2.) As was recommended more than once, you should set your receiver to "Multichannel" (provided all things being equal with the output being in TrueHD with the PS3). Of course, the receiver has the setting for "Multichannel" but it also has a setting of "All Channel Stereo." What do you think about thisetting or should I just not use it and stick with the "Multichannel" setting for TrueHD audio?

Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The Dynamic Range Control compresses the audio output of the PS3. Most people set this to OFF . Stick with MULTICHANNEL. The All Channel Stereo is exactly what it says. It sends ONLY 2.0 stereo to your speakers. Why would you want to downconvert 5.1 to 2.0 ???

Actually, multichannel is up to 7.1 on this receiver. As far as the "All Channel Stereo" I didn't say that I would want to downgrade from 5.1 to 2.0, what I suggested was that I didn't understand what the setting was for and made a request for more information… which you provided. Thank you.

Please understand that I am a novice at home theater. My previous HTIB was a seven year old RCA RT2280 with Dolby Digital being the best option on it and a whole lot less cryptic settings than the Onkyo.

Thanks again.

I have the 6200 Onkyo..I think you have to play with it and see what better sounds for you in your room , all channel stereo in my room is awesome with sports channels , the whole room sounds rocking but on videogames for example multi channel sounds amazing on sports games like nba2k series etc..just my advice if it helps , believe me everytime I put something I play with all the modes to see which one sounds better :P
