Default Another Planet Earth edition?

I was just watching Discovery Science and They had a commercial for Planet Earth in Hi Def on HD DVD and Blu-ray. I paid careful attention. They said nothing about an HD DVD player or Blu-ray player needed. Could cause confusion. This is something different though too. You can get the discs individually. It looked like each disc came in an individual case. I think the first one was $12.99? But I am not sure.

I think it's 15 bucks.

I noticed HD-DVD has dual discs that play both DVD and HD-DVD. The dual discs are the same color as HD-DVD only cases.

People may think they are getting a dual but end up with a HD-DVD only disc. Smart marketing people over there eh?

Yes, the first disc is $15. I don't know how much the others are. The website does say you need a player, but if you ordered from the phone number they may not tell you. The website is http://www.pedvd.com. I think I might rather order it this way since it looks like you get the individual cases and not the box that seems to have them shaking around inside. Also, this advertisement was specifically for the HD version and gave no mention of the standard DVD edition.

I think they just broke up the packaging for people who can't afford $60-$100 all at once. The commercial I saw said something like, "Get the first DVD in the series for just $15, with more to follow." But they made no mention of these split packages having any different content... that would be counter-intuitive.

Default Planet Earth US reissue?

So I guess Discovery is now going to put out the US aired version of Planet Earth with Sigourney Weaver narrating. I image a few people may have been confused when they popped in the currently issued version and heard David Attenbourough, but I actually liked him better as narrator.

I was waiting to get this. I saw the advertisement on TV for the first disc of the series for $15 and was going to go that route and then pick up the others as they came out. I liked Sigourney Weaver's narration and thought I would miss it. But when the DVDs of Walking With Dinosaurs came out, I didn't really notice there was a different narrator. I would with this though going from a female voice to a male voice. Anyway, I wish they would release some of their other series in Blu-ray. Walking With Dinosaurs, Walking With Prehistoric Beasts and all. I loved them!

I was very surprised to hear they had redone the narration with Sigourney Weaver. I've been watching and enjoying David Attenbourough documentaries all my life. His narration is one the reasons I bought Planet Earth.

Replacing Sir David is a real shame. But if they actually re-encoded the picture it would be really hard to resist. The PE discs are some of the finest looking video I own on BD, but the flaws of the low bitrate HD-DVD port are showing.

Ditto, if these are re-encoded without the white pulsing, I will re-buy/sell my BBC version.

It's because we Americans can't stand to hear any more stiff-assed Brits! /cheek

Or, as British comic Eddie Izzard puts it, "We play villains in American films because of the Revolutionary War. You're still holding a grudge after all these years!"

Sigourney is the one who narrated it when it was on US TV a month ago. I saw some it.

It's because of these Geico Insurance commercials appearing every 15 minutes on TV. They have this snobbish lizard mascot with a thick British accent. I would pay to see Morris the cat taking him down.

BBC should insist that Warner do a higher bitrate encode for BD AND provide both narrator tracks there as well. Doing seperate encodes will only confuse consumers.

AND do it on a BD50 with the inclusion of the making of. There's more than enough space!

I, unlike my fellow yanks it seems, completely agree. Mr. Attenborough's narration was excellent as always.

Like was mentioned previously, I like the idea of the Discovery version having both the sound tracks - that way we each can choose whose narration we like better. A BD 50GB disc should have plenty of space for that.

And get rid of that awful low bit rate HD DVD port.
