Default Sharp 720p LCD "Goes Black"

Sorry I don't have a model number, but bought a Blu-ray player just yesterday for my Father-in-Law, and I find out today his T.V. in his den area is "dying" so I need to figure out a new-tv plan for him now......

It's a 32" 720p Sharp LCD..... it's probably 3 years old.... anyways, it has an intermittent problem..... here's the details.

Turn it on, and the screen might just go "Black" but the green power light will stay on, and the audio will keep going. This happens for both OTA T.V. as well as DVDs (the only two current inputs)

So... questions.... Is it the back-light (which I suspect I guess) and if so, how expensive is it to repair (out of warranty) ????

Thanks!

P.S. YES, I told him to just replace the T.V. He's set at 32", because he had a 37" Aquos that he thought was "Too Big" so he gave it to us....
