So I recently got new speakers - got a great deal on the JBL Studio L series - a pair of 890's, the LC1, and the L830's. But now I want to upgrade my receiver to something more powerful. I am looking at the Elite SC25, or the Elite VSX 21.
My question is about the power rating of the speakers. The maximum recommended amp power is 150W. The continuous/peak rating is 75/300W. The SC25 puts out 140 WPC, the VSX 21 puts out 110 WPC. How do these receivers pair up with the speakers? Do I run the risk of damaging the speakers? I don't play extremely loud, but I do like to turn it up a bit when I am home alone. Will I notice a big difference between the 110 and 140 WPC? Any advice is appreciated. By the way, my current receiver is the Pioneer 919 AHK. Based on another post I read about the actual power put out by the 919 (around 30WPC with 5 channels driven), what kind of treat am I in for when I get the Elite? You'll be fine with either receiver. You can damage any speaker with any receiver/amp by playing to loudly for too long, but those receivers should be able to push your speakers louder than is comfortable with no trouble.
As far as power goes, more is almost always better, but it is up to you to decide if it is worth the money. There is really only about 1db difference between 110 and 140, but the more powerful receiver may sound a bit more relaxed at higher volumes due to increased headroom. |
