I just got my blu-ray copy of The Devil Wears Prada and it has very few supplements while the DVD dwarfs it with features. When I look at the case, the BD is a 25 GB SINGLE LAYER!!!!! WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Devil Wears Prada was released in the US & Canada before the BD-50 disc was approved. It may not have all the extras from the DVD but it does have a BD exclusive trivia track.
Not every film is going to need a BD-50 disc, a lot of films will fit just fine on a 25gb disc even with lossless audio. |

At least we know that in a few years, Fox will gladly re-release many movies on BD. Same goes for Paramount, Fox, Warner, and Sony so I guess the lesson is to completely drop Blu-ray Disc in favor of the much better DVD format. After all, high-def video and audio do not work unless they have extras.
OR Better solution is to buy a two-disc case, slip the DVD inside with the BD because most extras are in standard-definition anyways. Hey! That's what Fox is doing now. Granted it would be nice to have the commentary on the BD but at least it's a step somewhere. By the way... The UK release of Devil Wears Prada is a BD-50 and has all the DVD extras but doesn't have the trivia track. It is pretty affordable right now at around $15 to $25 US. So there is always that option. What's more, blurays are often the theatrical, rather than the expanded versions. Of course, the theatrical version is often just as good, or better paced (Not every film needs to be 4 hours, 11 minutes long...), but it's an opportunity for double dipping.

And the point made by the OP is quite valid. Sub-standard BD releases devoid of features so that movie studios can double dip a secondary mega release is lame lame lame. |

Well a lot of people including myself don't find extra features all that essential to the important of a Blu-ray disc. Honestly, I couldn't care less if a release has one supplement feature or twelve of them. That is probably one reason studios tend to leave them off the disc in many releases, they simply aren't that important.

the only movie i really noticed a stark difference from the dvd was Kingdom of Heaven. I got the director's cut on dvd and it had 2 disc worth of special features where as the blu ray has none. still for that movie i couldnt resist so what i did was replace the feature disc in the dvd case and put the blu ray disc in it's place. problem solved

For some people, extras are the icing on the cake or the difference between purchasing a title or passing on it. Myself, I think the only extras I've watched on blu were those on The Dark Knight. Otherwise I couldn't care less about them (it's all about the movie for me). With that said, I agree with the OP. In most cases, the extras already exist (especially on older catalog titles). It's my choice not to watch the extras even though I paid for them, but why should someone else be prevented from watching them it they want them? Shouldn't it be the norm for the studios to include them? Space on the disc not withstanding, I don't think its right for studios to hold out solely for a double-dip down the road. I know they do it, but I disagree with the practice.
OP - some members have given good advice, such as buying some cases that can hold 2 discs and popping the DVD in the 2nd slot. It's unfortunate that you have to resort to that, but at least you have options. |

I have a question, why is it that weird threads complaining about old Blu-ray titles keep popping up like this? You can look at the release date and go "oh, Blu-ray was pretty much an infant back then" and figure out why a title might not be up to today's standards.
Now, if people want to complain about current releases not having features, that's something I can hop on board with because it shouldn't happen anymore. |

There are a lot of films on BD that offer both the theatrical and extended/unrated cuts, and there are a lot more discs that only offer extended cuts then there are discs that only offer theatrical versions.... Here are just some titles that are only available in an expanded version on BD, and do not come with the theatrical cut: Daredevil Kingdom Of Heaven Watchmen Wild Things The Wedding Singer Underworld Tropic Thunder True Romance Talladega Nights Old School American Psycho Bad Santa Basic Instinct Beerfest Hellboy Dumb And Dumber The Da Vinci Code Friday Drillbit Taylor The Girl Next Door Halloween (2007) Superbad Saw 2, 3, 4, 5 Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves There are probably even more then that, but those are just off the top of my head.... |

You know what folks with 50gb there is no excuse not to have all the extras from the dvd! Early in bluray history for virtually every title released the first year all blurays were barebones discs. Making it a compromise product. HDDVD did a far better job concening extras as there were only a handfull of hddvd combos that didn't include them vs. the handful of blurays that did.
I don't mind the double dip if the bonus features are brand new. But to release a bluray lacking the special features from a 5 year old special edition dvd is simply inexcusable. Thankfully all the newer bluray titles contain all the extras from the older format. The exception being FOX, MGM releasing MPEG-2 titles mastered in 2007 and released in 2009 as they have done with quite a few titles this year. The best bet is vote with your wallet! If Fox, MGM titles lack special features they don't get purhased. If Warner titles don't contain lossless audio they don't get purchased. If any major studio releases a title with an MPEG-2 encode they don't get purchased. MPEG-2 and DD are best reserved for what they were intended for, dvd!
