I am assuming you mean a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver right? Well the one I use and find it very good is the Onkyo 605. Which has two HDMI 1.3a inputs and one output. So one of the HDMI inputs would be from your PS3 and thus out to your speakers that are connected to your receiver. Then the HDMI output on the receiver would go to the HDMI input on your tV. Now as far as your TV goes, you would not be able to do that from the TV unless you have an HDMI output, usually TV's only have HDMI inputs and not outputs. What type of service do you use for your TV? Satellite or Cable?

Depending which service you use and the corresponding Satellite or cable box, and assuming that box has an HDMI output then you can connect that to the second HDMI input on the receiver which would play the audio as well and then of course have the HDMI out on the receiver to go to your HDMI input on your TV for the video.

If your cable box or satellite box has no HDMI output then you could run component cables and optical for the audio to the receiver and then the receiver, the Onkyo 605, would then pass the video onto the HDMI cable out to the TV, and then the audio would be decoded in the receiver and thus go out to your speakers.

You are correct in your summary.

I have heard good and bad things. One the biggest differences is that I believe the Sony does not have hdmi 1.3 and thus no HD audio codecs or uncompression hardware. Thus no Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA. Not like that matters if all you watch your blu-ray movies on your PS3 but in the future for other standalone players and such you would loose out on that audio. Also the difference is the price. Sony $1000-$1500 and the Onkyo $400. Quite a big difference in price and I don't think the Sony justifies the price. I don't know too much on the Sony, however based on specs I don't believe the Sony is that much better than the Onkyo, especially for the price difference.

Cool Caution/Warning

Most passthroughs only support 1080i and so you cannot use the 1080p functionality for your display if it goes through the receiver first..............not a problem for cable since the highest resolution available is 1080i but it is a problem for your Blu-Ray/PS3 since it supports 1080p.

Also, most HDMI inputs in receivers right now are "passthrough" and not actually able to use the sound signal from the HDMI. I have had to "settle" on optical cables via my PS3 for sound and plug the HDMI directly into my TV.

Finally, if price is not a problem. You really should go to a place like www.onecall.com and talk to one of their folks. They can help you build a really nice system that does exactly what you need. It will cost though.

By the way, I don't work for onecall but feel free to tell them about me and that they should give me a discount on their gear!! j/k.

Have fun with your new setup and enjoy the forums.

For AV Receiver, take a look at the Onkyo 605.

For speakers, take a look at the x-series from AV123.

Well, since here are a lot of people with knowledge of these things, I'll try to ask something regarding speakers.
What specs are important, if I want to have speakers for multi-channel-PCM-sound? It's just for a spot of 2,5x2,5 meters. I have some cheapo satellites and I guess they won't suffice for this purpose. I don't wanna pay to much and hope that I can tap that sound goodness with low cost speakers. Someone said once, that you can't buy into MC-PCM on a budget. Seems to be true.

Depends on what you consider affordable. As you have already seen Im sure, that I am suggesting Cambridge Soundworks speakers, which will give you awesome sound at $199 each...but I would assume that is too much.

But you coudl always go for the cheaper ones, but still have the same/similar drivers the higher end models do. at about $99 each.

Now I have never actually heard these specific ones before, but if they are anything like the ones I have (MC300) then I am sure you will not be let down.

Just go here to read more.

The MC150 speakers. $99 ea These can be used as main/center speakers. And also surround speakers.

All the Newton series speakers here

Really stupid question time...

Okay, as you're hooking up your speakers to whatever receiver you have, the left channel vs the right channel, who's left/right? The listener or the receiver?

In other words, is the right channel the right of the listeners perspective or from the receivers perspective?

Your left and right as your looking at the receiver.

No it wont get diminished.

And thats the whole point. The monitor out, HDMI, will output 1080p, it passes it along as it receives it....just as I said before.

So far thats the only way to get HDMI to the receiver..is going from something outputting HDMI, to something that takes it in (like a TV). And the receiver acts as a bridge, in lack of batter words.
