Default Sort of tempted by a SACD player

I have heard of these SACD players and disc but never paid to much attention to them because I figured they would be expensive, the disc would be expensive and my choice of music would not be in a Super Audio format, my favorite bands like Metallica and Slayer. That and I never had a "real" stereo system. But earlier this week I did get my first 5.1 surround sound system up and running. I was thinking about adding a real CD player instead of using my 40gig PS3 or dvd player and I thought about going with a changer. 200 disc? Maybe a bit much. But while I was at Best Buy today I seen a Sony 5 disc SACD changer for under 200 bucks and it got me thinking... Should I?

I don't know too much about SACDs but I would assume the players can read regular audio CDs

its the lack music that I like in the SACD format that is really holding me back. I am not even sure how well the SACD format is doing. If I am buying a new CD changer anyway, would it make since to get a SACD player "in case"?

About the only SACDs I may like that I have seen available is Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath

Forget about those horrible multi-disc changer things. If you really are interested in SACD, you could do worse than to check out Oppo's BD-83, a universal player.

Here's a discussion on SA-CD.net regarding this NON-release.

Or go with the Oppo DV-980 at $169.00 which is a universal player without the Blu-ray functionality that the BD-83 gives you.

Yes they can play CDs.

SACD is pretty much dead, except for classical and jazz. The best hope for high res multichannel music now is Blu-ray.

Yeah, I was excited about that release and ordered it from Amazon. When it arrived, I didn't even need to open it to realize no SACD was included. I promptly returned it. Too bad!

My first SACD player's laser came off it's hinges. I haven't bought another one since the support for SACD was pretty disappointing.
I'm hoping that blu-ray audio will fill that void.

SACD has been a great format. There are thousands of titles available in a wide variety of genres. It is dominated by Classical music now, but many big artists have multiple SACD's, like Elton John and Bob Dylan. The Rolling Stones are also plentiful on SACD.

The only caveat I would mention is the increasing scarcity of certain titles, driving rare but popular titles into high prices.

Well, I got a couple factors working against me chosing a SACD player, one is, the format is pretty much dead and two, I can't find my types of music on the format. Maybe I would do better putting that money into a stand alone CD player or get a nice BD player

I don't know the type of music you listen to, but have you tried searching on SA-CD.net?

You won't find heavy metal in SACD. I do have Metallica's Black Album in dvd-audio and it is great but this format is long gone.

Go with the Oppo so you'll have a choice of SACD and DVD-Audio. On the latter format you'll find Metallica, Megadeath, Motörhead, Queensr˙che, AC/DC and others.

There's a list of hardrock/metal titles on DVD-A in the music store at http://www.dvd-a.net

Two hardrock suggestions on SACD: Guano Apes and Manowar (hard to get by)

I read a review that said the Paranoid SACD was horrible.

(Or maybe it was DVD-A,... I don't remember... anyways,.... it's supposedly way bad.)

I only have a single SACD but I love it.

The thing about the Sony disk changers like the 595-- I have the 2000ES-- is that they occupy the 5.1 multichannel inputs. Most receivers only have one set, preventing you from easily switching between DVD-Audio, Bluray, and SACD.

If this is not a real limitation because of hdmi, why not just get a sacd player with hdmi?

I too was looking for something to play SACDs. And it seems as though many of the titles I would like to have on SACD, already are.... Like Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan... I understand that SACD is on the way out.

Anyway, I have a Sony 360s Blu-Ray player. Any chance someone knows whether that plays SCAD's? I am assuming it plays DVD-A's, but music on those seems to be hard to find.

Thanks for your time.

Nope. DVD-Audio is not the same as DVD-Video. If I stick one of my DVD-Audio disks in my bluray player, it's going to read the DVD-Video layer (dolby digital, pcm stereo, dts). If I stick it into my DVD-Audio player, I'll be able to access the lossless 5.1 tracks. If I stick it in my SACD player, nothing will happem

The Oppo bluray player handles Bluray, SACD, and DVD audio/video. If you're really interested, and have a reliable source of SACDs and DVD-Audio discs, you can probably pick up a "universal" player from somewhere. Some even will put the high resolution audio on the HDMI so you needn't mess with analogue cables.

I got into DVD-Audio because my Oppo DVD-player could play them. I got into SACD, because almost no one made DVD-Audio discs, but SACD seemed mildly popular.

.... I held off on bluray /hddvd because I didn't fancy another format war.
