Default How loud do you listen to movies at?

Like it states above, when listening to a movie with no restrictions (wives, neighbors, etc.) what is your prefered db level measured at your listening postion? Please only vote/post if you've actually tested your preference with a SPL meter too-

Depends on the movie's soundtrack, but generally anywhere from -17 to -6. I have no idea what the db levels are though, I need to get myself an SPL meter.

Example for me, when I play a movie like Cloverfield on Blu, I want to feel the explosions. That's how loud I have my volume.

Since I would say that 0 on my Denon is 80db, than I am less than 80db becasue I don'u usually turn it past -10 often. I've never actually pulled my SPL out to confirm, however.

Loud enough to shake items on my shelves. But, not loud enough to knock that stuff clear off of the shelves.

0. This sets the volume for dialog between 75-85db and allows peaks of up to 105/115db. Now my system can't quite hit that loud, but I try.

I should've specificed 'peaks' that's what I was really refering to when I started the poll, I don't expect anyone in they're right mind to listen to the ambient dialog stuff anywhere around these levels!

So, for those who have, or are going to for that matter, what are the peak readings when you listen to a 'good' audio movie, like someone mentioned earlier, Cloverfield, for instance?

Loud enough to have cracked my window on a few different Blu's (The Incredible Hulk, Friday the 13th (2009) and 300)
I hate when my roommates home because she says she doesn't mind when I have them really loud but I know she really hates it. So when she is not home I literally crank it up and my window has felt the consequences , it will need to be replaced very shortly.

The goal is to make all your speakers play at the same loudness (SPL). You do this by adjusting each speaker up or down. In your example, +2 means you added 2db to the loudness of that speaker.

Usually anywhere from -5 dB to -15dB on my receiver. Sometimes up to 0 if I'm feeling wild enough.

Exactly what that is in decibels I have no idea - where's my SPL meter?

When I'm home alone, (even though I dont have hi-def sound yet....(i hope too soon)) I like it to be loud enough to make it seem as if I was there. When the family is home, I have to keep it down .

On my Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select, yes it is 9 years old and still performing. The amps on the Kenwood are not used! I use the RCA outputs with different matching amps and Behringer DCX296 for the LCR matching front JBL Control 5 with up to x12 JBL control 1 and two subs one for sub bass extension LCRS that’s handled by the Eltax A-12R and for LFE.1 x1 JBL 4645.

Level normally around +80 to +90dbc while dba may only be around +80dba for few short moments.

I have audio limiting set for the LCR LF/HF so if I want just a bit more I’ll set to for different level then run the film, as of yet its been fine.

The Bourne Ultimatum on Bluray region B dtsHDMA when Bourne crashes head-first though window WOW its comfortable at (83dba to 89dbc) I can feel the lows impacting has the glass and wooden frame is busted in, then goes to fast hand to hand combat scene that is brutally fast.

Besides I’ve heard far louder and deep at the Empire Leicester Square in screen 1 that will eat, our home cinemas all-up for breakfast launch and dinner! Now then!

Fader 0db for most of the Bluray titles I have. DVD a few –db down as some are bit louder, like Terminator 3 is louder on region 2 DVD yet softer quieter in level on Bluray.

I think its -6db difference between the two film format discs.
