Should I sell my Samsung BD-P1000 and get the PS3 now or wait until Christmas? What do you think is the best decision? Thanks for yall's opinions and advice ahead of time...

It is remotely possible the PS3 will drop in price again by then.
But since it just did, there is no possibility of it doing that before then. Although there are a few good games out, the majority of the great games are not out yet (aka FFXIII, MGS4). Waiting won't kill you and you can save up more by then to buy more games. Plus, there will be more firmware updates by then too. |

I would say now. Very doubtful a price drop for the 60GB model will come before the holidays. IMO I think it will happen after Janurary.
But then again, you already have a BD player, so if your jonesin for some HD gaming goodness get it, if not wait and see what happens. |

This article might change your mind. I will also post it elsewhere as it is very good for the format, and speaks volumes as to why the PS3 is such a screaming deal!

Wait for Chistmas.
The newer models (esp. the 80 GB one) will use 65 nanometer die-shrinks of current PS3 HW components (from CELL, to the Flex I/O controller and the RSX chip). In layman's terms, this means that your PS3 will consume lesser electricity and it will create lesser heat which means that your PS3 will consume less power consumption and run cooler and more quiet than a 90-nanometer PS3 (ie. the PS3 units sold before year 2007) when running the same kind of tasks. I suggest you wait till Christmas ![]() |

Depends on if you want the emotion chip or the emulator. Do you want a 60 or an 80 gb HD? And finally do you want to pay $499 or $599? To my knowledge the PS3 will be returning to it's original price once they release the 80gb. I am quite happy with my 60. So I would pick up one of those right now!!!! Good luck

Get it now. Why wait. If you purches the console now, all you'll have to worry about is the software later on. As we all know the holiday season is when the majaority of tripple A titles come out and they can be kind of pricey

I'd suggest getting one now if you have any PS2 games, due to the Emotion Engine chip being taken out once the 60GB SKU is all gone

If you want to play the older games get it now. As for the hard drive, it doesn't matter which one you buy, you can just go out and buy the biggest notebook hard drive you want and switch it out. Hell, Sony tells you how to do it in the manual.

If your plan is to watch movies with it, then get it now. The thing about noise is a valid argument. It will be quieter later.
If you plan mainly for game use, get it later. They'll have the backward compatibility software kinks of the 80gb worked out by then, and I have a feeling we'll have an even better machine coming out that offers more than 80gb by then. Seriously.... the game list is disappointing, and the games we do have are often ports with crappy frame rates. It will be better by Christmas. As you can see, I own over 70 Blu-rays and over 15 games. I like to think I offer an honest opinion. By they way... it's really quite funny to watch people basically say, "You'd better get the PS3 now, because the next one is going to suck by comparison." For all we talk up the greatness of the PS3, it's just really, really strange to hear people say Sony is planning to make things worse instead of better. I don't buy that. I'd say get it now.
the price of 5 blu-ray movies (each about 30 bucks plus tax... comes out to about 35 bucks, right?) equils about $175.00... as much as they MAY drop the price, they arent gonna drop it 175 bucks... not to mention, the movies prob dont come out to 35 bucks. its prob like, 2 bucks more. I dont have a calculator with me right now... ![]() but yea. anyway- Id say now. Even if you dont want it for movies... the games out now are pretty good. alll of them really... you could also buy a 20 GB version and upgrade the HDD... of coarse, thats at the expense of wifi, and a card reader. But you'll save yourself 50 bucks. Ahh. well, basically its all up to you. Im typing this on my PS3 right now... i use it more than my PC, or anything elese. I would buy it now... actually, I would buy it at launch. Cause i did. ![]() |

Another note... if you get the BR player now, you'll still be waiting 6 to 8 weeks to get your free movies. When you get your free movies from that list, you only get to choose one from each category, which means you'll likely end up with some movies you'd rather not buy anyway -- or may already own, since you have the BR player already. Take a look at how the promotion is set up. The categories are set up so the average joe is lucky to get more than one "prime title", if you can call them that.
As evidenced by other promotional discs, you can often get those for as low as $10 each on E-bay after everyone gets them, because so many people dump them off for money. Buy off of E-bay later and you'll be able to choose the ones you want for cheaper than the "original retail price" thrown around as part of the offer. So in reality, you're talking about $50 to $60 of savings from the free discs (but now getting many you probably care to buy anyway, so it may be a moot point). And who knows... movies might even be cheaper, and I'm CERTAIN there will be some sort of disc deal around by Christmas you could jump on. Last edited by baccusboy; 07-29-2007 at 08:44 AM. |

Wait, So when 1.1 comes out, anyone here with a BD player that is not a ps3 will be getting screwed? and new movies will not work? or will they still work fine, just you won't be able to do some things like the new ones? I am very confused about this.

I currently have an XBOX 360 with wireless controller and a few games. I have been leaning toward Bluray but am still hesitant with this war. I bought the 360 figuring I would play some games but guess what, I really don't (occasionally). Should I trade in my 360 at gamestop or something and pickup a 60gb PS3 or should I wait? I have no idea what this EE chip is and why it is being taken out of the new model. Any opinions from those of you that are more knowledgeable on this subject is appreciated. Thanks!

The latter: movies new and old will play just fine, but extras (like PIP) which rely on 1.1 features won't. Some people might cry foul at this, but even some DVDs these days have the tiny disclaimer on the back: "Not all features are compatible with all players".
