Why is it that Pixar movies always looks superior to all others in terms of PQ and AQ. Is it because they are made using computer technology? I guess they should make more computer movies and less using physical actors. I mean look at Avatar?

Well 1st of all movies like TDK,Iron Man, & Man on Fire need actors.
Now Pixar does release the best Blu-ray Disc no doubt. But don't forget they use four yrs on doing it. They spend time on casting, graphics and their Score on their movies is outstanding! Overall Pixar just never drops the ball when a Blu-ray comes their way!(touchdown!) |

I agree that pixars animation is second to none. Just compare up to 9 both are computer animated but up blows 9 out of the water in PQ! I do disagree that there should be more CG in live action movies. Just look at I am legend the CG totally ruins the movie.

quick answers:
a) pixar does proper RESEARCH. b) awesome storytelling utilizing the research. let's start w/Toy Story in 1995, all of the crew who worked to make the movie happen played toys and dealt with them in a realistic way. all of the fx were made to serve the story. as i recalled from the bonus DVDs, the amount of "playing w/toys" was absurd even for preparation for the making of the movie. they did it again for the sequel in 1999 and will do it again for it next year 2010. it's absurd how much research they do. here's how did they researched: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcRM78fd9i0 this was the short made and shown before TS1. it's in their research that they found the courage to do the full length TS1. for TS2 it was Luxo Jr., so the sequels kind of deviate from their norm where the short films are research projects for the film at bay (as you'll see). Before A Bug's Life was Geri's Game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4UXktc0JtI that was research for human and cloth animation, which came into use for improving human animation in A Bug's Life and cloth simulations whenever the bugs used them or were around them. next, in Monster's Inc., the short that appeared before it is For the Birds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aS3u3xIrBTQ which was http://www.pixar.com/shorts/ftb/behind.html research for feather/fur simulations, which lends to realistic simulation of fur on Monsters Inc. Finding Nemo was a bit backwards (didn't have anything new), it has an older short just like TS2, not research for its own stuff but for its own research, they went under water and stuff, the crew to discover what it was like and also aquarium, extensive dives and so on. The Incredibles had Boundin', which was research for weather fx in the Incredibles. Cars had One Man Band, which was research for collision. but the crew also took a trip on route 66 themselves! Ratatouille had Lifted, which was audio research for sound fx. but the crew/animators went to culinary school as well. Wall-E had Presto, which was more R&D for human expression, but mostly the crew did other research. Up had Partly Cloudy, which was fog fx research. the crew also went to South American for real. so without extensive nerdy/geeky research it wouldn't look very good. i'm talking about fox/dreamworks/Disney in house and many other fx houses who try to do what pixar does. it's just not even close when it comes to research =). |

Computer generated films will always look better on transfers than live action films. This is primarily because of the fact that CGI films are made entirely in computers. Every little detail in the background is constructed inside computers. So, when they get transferred to home videos, they studio is moving the entire raw film in the disk. Not a single detail in the background is missed. Every little pixel is transferred.
However when it comes to live action films, there will always be grain. Grain is the picture. No matter how pristine the picture or the camera is, there will always be grain. A live image is being recorded inside the film gauge. The image is not produced in the gauge like CGI. |
