Default PS3 Needs To Be UNLOCKED!

Yes, I said it. The PS3 should be UNLOCKED to region coding. I understand why they do it, but it's kinda assinine. All the money goes to the same place anyways.

I hate restrictions. Hopefully someone, if not Sony will come out with it.

All the money does not go to the same place. For example Titanic is Fox overseas and Paramount here. Terminator 3 is Columbia overseas and Warner here. Producers is Universal here and someone else overseas. There's lots of titles

Region coding has nothign to do with the US, and everything to do with foreign markets

You hate restrictions?

Let me guess, some of your other screen/game names include such hits as Anarchist & Rebel1 right?

You sir are not immune to the rule of law.

The OP has a valid point though. I am european and currently reside in the US. I have quite a few european DVD discs I cannot play on my PS3. Very annoying!

Theres alot of smartasses coming out of the wood work as of late. Your one of them.

I am not trying to be above the law. However, if I move to another country - which I have been contemplating and I take my BD's with me and my PS3 - but my PS3 breaks one day and I have to get a UK or EU PS3 player.. what then? I suck it up and RE-BUY my discs? I don't think so.

There are LEGIT reasons for NOT having region coding. And no, my other names were not Anarchist or Rebel1. They were, YourADick and YouNeedToLearnToRead

Have a great day!

That was great...

You do bring up a good point, with people moving from one country to another.

One way around it I'm sure that would be feasable in that instance. Sony could monitor where your ip address was from when connected to the internet on the PS 3 and if you wanted to change your location from one country to another they should be able to verify it and send you the needed firmware as an option in the Your account section. Know it'd take them a slight amount of money to do it but it would solve that issue would it not..

I'm hoping some kind of backdoor code gets released to make it region-free, like my wal-mart purchased DVD player has.

Is the Toshiba HD-DUD region-free?

I guarantee you that couldn't happen even if they wanted it to, because then it opens the door to patching to disable copy protections

Your crap Chinese player has a backdoor code because they ship those players all over the world to dozens of different manufacturers. You'll find that major brand (A-list) players are all hard locked.

HD DVD is region free till the next model year (if there even is one) at which point they willl start region coding

Do you have a link on that?

I recall a proposal to add region coding was before the DVD Forum, but last I heard it had lapsed without a vote.

Right, but the same thing applies to music CDs, and there's no such thing as region encoded CDs!

I understand why it's done, but I really hate region encoding. At least with Blu-ray, a reasonable compromise was agreed on.

I have piles of imported DVDs, it doesn't make me happy either

Importing has long been part of the music culture, much harder to stop, and not something they even really considered back in the early 80s when CDs came about.

Let's face it, CDs simply don't represent the kind of investment a movie does. A big album (with rare exception) $250,000-500,000. Big movie? $100-150 million.

I have no idea how the whole region coding thing ended up, only that it was supposed to go in next year

This is not a big deal for me since all my DVD's are region 1. I have personally never under stood region encoding anyway. Why does it matter if I want to buy disks from the U.K., North America, or Japan?

Actually, CDs are about $10 to $17. The typical successful album goes Platinum (1,000,000 sold). That would mean about $10 million to $17 million. Some of the most successful groups (boy bands) have gone Platinum 10 times over on an album!

Of course, your point still remains intact, but the figures are a bit more accurate now.

like all laws make sense anyways - whatever. LOL laws are made by peoples opinions not God - so if I dont agree with them, I just might break them. Its illegal to drive 50 in a 45 zone - I wonder what percentage of us do at least that? True, you will pay the price if caught though. Also when I say breaking laws, I dont mean murder or anything - so please dont blow this out of proportion. This is just in response to a few of the earlier posts on this thread. Not trying to go off topic or make anyone angry
