Artwork on the reverse side.

Looks better than a regular case imo.

people just like to collect them i personally only own about 5 and i rarely buy them.. i dont go out of my way to get them but stuff like ultimate versus to me is worth getting on steelbook because its a 3 disc as where the normal is cut and an on 1 disc

others ill just pick up if i see them and they are around the same price as the DVD or Blu-Ray, pretty sure no one in my area cares about them because FYE still has a ton of ironman, cloverfield, dark knight, transformers ROTF etc and BB has like 100 bourne supremacy and tons of others

hell our FYE still has a bunch of those spiderman 3 statue collectors editions and they are selling them for 14.99

yeah alot of them are thats why i only own about 5.. but if you get them day 1 its usually the same price like i got the dark knight BR steelbook for 19.99 w/ 5 dollar off coupon when it released and got cloverfield for 19.99 new last week (on sale)

check your local FYE if you are semi interested in them because older ones usually sell cheap if they don't sell, ours is jam packed with them for 19.99 which isn't THAT bad.. better then the insane mark ups that people sell them for.. like i am legend back when it came out was selling for ridiculous prices but now you can get one off ebay for 10-15 bucks

Essentially they're just a packaging gimmick, like lenticular slip covers, etc. Some people collect them, some don't see the point in collecting them.

I love them. I love them because they're something different and they add a little variety to the lineup on my shelf. I have about 15 on DVD, but I've only got one (on order) on Blu because it's Highlander, which is my favorite movie, and I think the case is really nice.

To me, I almost always like the artwork better on steelbooks than I do the regular release. It's usually different enough from the original release that it's a cool second option. I think the case for Star Trek (DVD) and Transformers 2 (DVD) are a lot cooler than the original package. I'd love to have the ones for the Pixar / Disney movies, but I can't bring myself to pay $35 for them.

Now, I'm kind of waiting on the obligatory "I watch the movie, not the case, so steelbooks are dumb" posts that seem to follow these topics on DVD Talk :-)

They are very popular as a collector thing. My friend goes out of his way to find stellbooks. He as a huge collection of them on DVD and now BD. I never really bother with them but they are popular.

Default is it worth opening a Steelbook blu ray?

i know that if you dont open a steelbook blu ray movie it makes its value wayyy higher if you sell it, but just today i bought A Bugs Life steelbook blu ray and i did open it to watch it. lets say i go and sell it later on in the near future would it still be worth lots of money?????

Well prices differ for each steelbook, Some people will say yes open them others will say no cause they like them to be mint and pristine (you know who you are )

I would normally say just open them cause at the end of the day they are meant to be enjoyed but i find myself being selective these days in which ones i open

Open them. I don't buy my movies for resale. More so for my personal enjoyment.

I love them, not only because of the protection factor, but the case art can look so much better than a regular ol' plastic case with the art insert.

I have only gone for current releases that I have really enjoyed the movie, and thought that the steelbook looked much better than the regular dvd art.

The steelbooks I have are Dune extended edition, Planet Terror, Deathproof, Iron Man, and Star Trek. Those that have had a blu release, I keep the blu discs in the steelbooks and give the regular dvds to my friends.

I thought about GI Joe, but I didn't like that Snake Eyes was the only one on the steelbook cover.

I also have the Real Ghostbusters complete set from Shout!... and they put all of their dvd's in steelbooks too.

The U.S. releases are about the same price as the regular release. Once you get into importing, sure it gets expensive.

just open the F****** thing. Collector's mentality sucks. If it is still valuable you'll be able to sell it anyway...during the right market conditions.

I did this with comic books for YEARS.
They still sit "in the basement" never read.

For me, now, it's only worth buying if you're going to enjoy it, not to set it away in the dark.

Someone said this before and it makes a lot of sense. If you had a bunch of sealed DVD stealbooks are they worth anything now? Not really.

Enjoy your steels and open them. I use mine and never regret it.

I know thatsome guys keep their stuff sealed but i can´t understand it and i won´t!
Who knows there might be a disc with a HUGE scratch in it.
