Default Multiple Releases

The greed of the studios, ah. I see that Stargate 15th anniversary has been released, just after I buy the first BD release, didn't know that a remastered version with more extras was looming. They really have us by the, well I won't say it. We are dying to upgrade our collection and snatching up what they are churning out just to have them release a better version later. Master and Commander BD release, extras wise was a dud. I have the special edition which has many extras on it. JFK appears to be also a dud, I went for the special book edition that came out at the same time that included a couple of extra DVDs. Has there ever been a release of The Hunt For Red October with extras that justify the greatness of this story/book?

The worse quality transfer I have seen so far is Ghostbusters. Horrible artifacts. Casino Royale, and 300, second releases with many more extras. I would rather wait a few months for a better release, both in extras and quality. At least include the extras on the best regular DVD releases on the initial BD release so we can sell those old DVDs.

So far there have been a few releases that got it right the first time, such as Patton, Zodiac, and The Godfather Collection. But it seems that the ones that get it right on initial release are in the minority. I get its part of their business model to feed as many versions to the public as possible, but it just ticks me off sometimes.

That's film grain..... I thought it was a "Decent" release..... not great, not poor.

Just buy what you want....... my answer is C)

It's a DNR hack-job..... you don't understand film, that is why you're angry..... I'm hoping for a re-release of Patton that hasn't been molested.

Well I guess these experts who reviewed PQ don't understand film either:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Patto...ay-Review/679/
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1341/patton.html
http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/reviews/...iew_patton.php
http://www.thehdroom.com/news/Patton...sc_Review/2853
http://www.dvdfanatic.com/review.php?id=pattonblu

...and countless other sites. And if you watch Ghostbusters, its not film grain, its pushing dark scenes and causing artifacts in the shadows. Have you seen the HDNET Lowry Digital transfer? It has some of the artifacts, but much less noticeabl (like the shadows in the beginning scenes when the dean throws them out or the initial library scenes, which look underexposes and they tried to push them digitally to get details. You don't see that in well lit scenes like when they are outside after they were fired discussing their options. I understand grain. I have been shooting semi-pro still photography since the 80s.

Yeah, you would think they will get Gangs right, that looked pretty good on DVD.

If its choice betweening owning the movie on home video now with nothing and then a special edition later or no home video release until everything can be included, I'll take the former.

Sometimes a re-release is inevitable.

Stargate's supposed 15th anniversary release actually coincided with Stargate Universe's television premiere. Yeah, it sucks that you have to buy it again but you are being forced to.

If you were running a company...

Would you rather have Anchor Bay's anemic Blu-ray launch schedule of: Halloween, Evil Dead II, Day of the Dead, and Dawn of the Dead which was followed up the next month by individual BD volumes for Masters of Horror and Beowulf and Grendel.

or

Would you like Lionsgate's initial batch which was:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Lord of War, Saw, The Punisher, Crash and then the next month follow up with Total Recall, Stir of Echoes, The Devil's Rejects, and Stargate.

Lionsgate's initial releases offer something for nearly every taste (except romance unless you count Saw) while Anchor Bay's initial titles offered up cult classic titles, and major niche titles.

Lionsgate wanted to maximize their BD slate and chose titles based on what can sell. At least in Stargate's case, they included the comentary on the first Blu-ray Disc, that didn't happen with Fox's initial batch of Blu goodies.

Hell, Paramount delayed Ordinary People's DVD release for years in the hope that they could get Robert Redford to do a full-length commentary. The schedules were always out of sync for both parties so Paramount just decided to release it as is.

James Cameron requested that the documentary for Titanic be removed from the special edition DVD because to him it was incomplete without Leonardo DiCaprio. Imagine if Cameron held the SE DVD back just for this, we may never get Titanic and Blu-ray Disc at all.

As for Zodiac, the DVD got the theatrical version on a movie-only DVD while the special edition was the director's cut. The Blu-ray Disc only offers the director's cut of the film which while well done, would have been complemented nicely by the theatrical version.
Wait, this happened to Payback too.

Hmmm. Maybe there is no perfect release as agreed by everyone. Sometimes, just owning the movie is enough. I mean Stranger Than Fiction had a terrfiic Blu-ray Disc already, so why pay for the "all-new" special edition?

I get what you are saying. But how about PQ? Some of these came out looking worse then on DVD. Also, I think if these companies actually used BD Live to its fullest potential, then some of these extras on later additions SHOULD be added to the BD Live content of previously released titles. That would make me happy.

BD-Live only works if a title is Profile 2.0 compliant. Many early BDs were 1.0 compliant only so no BD-Live features.

Obviously I mean going forward for those that have BD Live, it would be nice to make them forward compatible. Some BD releases have tons of stuff and are pretty complete for first time releases such as Patten, Zodiac and Any Given Sunday.
