Default Yamaha 765 better than 663?

I'm helping a buddy put together a home theater. A couple of weeks ago Electronics Expo was selling the Yamaha 663 for around $330. Seemed like a pretty good deal so I convinced him to buy it. Well, two weeks later it still hadn't arrived, so we called EE. They said they're out of the 663 but would send a 765 instead, at no additional cost. Seems like a no-brainer to go with a "higher" model of a newer receiver, but in casual reading I get the impression people prefer the 663 to the 665.

So, all things considered, is $330 (+$40 shipping) a fair price on a Yamaha RX-V765? Or did they bait and switch him? The lowest price I've seen on this is Newegg for $400. Amazon still has it at its MSRP of $600. It seems like a fair exchange, but you never know with those slick New Jersey folks.

He bought a Blu-ray player and my old Polk RM7650 5.1 speaker set. He plays a lot of Wii with his 4 year old daughter and watches sports. That's about all he'll be using it for. Can he run his Wii through this thing via component video cables? If so, will it upconvert?

From what I can tell it's pretty much the same reciever but with more hdmi inputs. The power rating and the weight are the same with the 765 and the 663. They pretty much screwed the pootch on the 665. I would say your good.

That sounds like a great buy to me. I paid about 500 for mine a while back. The 765 has more HDMI inputs and the Pure Direct mode passes video as well as audio too.

I chose the 663 (over the less expensive Onkyo 507) because I want him to be able to connect the Wii to the Yamaha via component video and then HDMI out to TV. When I compare the 663 to the 765 on the Yamaha site it says the 663 has "Component Video Up Conversion" but the 765 doesn't. The 765 does have "HDMI Up Conversion (with upscaling up to 1080p)". What's the difference?

If your receiver output to your TV is HDMI it does Upconversion, otherwisw it donīt, with component is the same thing if you pass video with component.

So the Wii video, connected to the receiver with component video cables, can be sent to the TV via HDMI? That's my question here. I ask because I recall some receivers aren't capable of doing that.

you'll have to read the manual to find out, but the quick specs do say "Analog video upscaling to full HD 1080p". So I would think your fine

Sounds like a great deal IMO. I've read where alot of people consider the 765 to be the successor to the 663, rather than the 665.

Also keep in mind that most receivers can upconvert component video and pass it out via HDMI no problem. With some of the cheaper ones, however, there's a problem with upconverting composite video to HDMI. This was the case with my old Onkyo 605. It would upconvert component video but not composite video.

Cool, thanks for the reassurance. I can rest easy now.
