Default 2010 Internet Security Software

Hey all. I just bought my wife a new laptop for christmas and am wondering what the best internet security software to use for it. Any suggestions?

We do alot of online purchasing, banking. The past few years we've been using trend micro antivirus/antispyware along with webroot spysweeper. I've been reading and am looking to get a more all encompassing internet security and am looking for the best suggestions. So many different site claim this or that security software is the best. Right now I'm hearing that Norton Internet Security has really stepped up their game and now longer bog down the computers.

Any info/suggestions would be very helpful. TIA.

Norton still sucks imo, but yes it is better.. I would go with AVG, Avira or Kaspersky.. All available for under $50 , IF you chose to buy

Thanks for the replies. Question: what makes you all say Kapersky is so good? I've noticed it on many top ten lists but alot of the users say they don't like certain aspects.

Also, I'm not above getting a free version as long as it's really good. I just am not familiar with the free versions. Mainly I'm looking for one that obviously does a good job protecting the computer but one that also doesn't slow it down very much.

I just picked up Kaspersky internet security 2010 on special for 20$ for 1 year. I had Norton, hated it and was extremely slow, then I went to McAfee which did nothing (periodically missed dangerous files) then I went to Kaspersky.

Kaspersky is a very popular choice because of it's ease to use and it's reliable. I have been using kaspersky for about 7 years now , and not one problem.

Its popular because its the sh!t, plain and simplle..

It filters things much better, its very quick to update , very quick to catch viruses/malware etc that slip by many other software programs, Its very efficient, ( not dragging your PC down using alot of RAM, ) etc etc.. It just catches more problems that others dont.. Dont really know how else to describe it

Kaspersky's internet security suite does many things well, but it is not the perfect all-in-one solution; even the highly-touted Norton 360 Version 3, which is rated as a top pick consistently by both corporate and independent reviewers, has a few areas which can be improved upon (most notably, its antispam and parental control features, but then again, so does Kaspersky). An internet security suite should be thought of as a 'jack of all trades, master of none'.

I can't comment on Norton's latest product offering because I haven't used it personally; it would be unfair of me to castigate or dismiss a product based on its past offerings (which I have used, much to my chagrin). I have used/tested a range of products from numerous developers (including AVG, Avira GmbH, Comodo, McAfee, Microsoft, Norman, Zone Labs); Kaspersky has been the most consistent and reliable all-around performer for my needs (2010 marks my third year of usage).

Where does it falter? The antiphishing and parental control modules need work, but neither is an overriding concern because a) I don't have kids, and b) why would someone of Nigerian royalty need my assistance?

As avid a supporter as I am of Kaspersky, I do not rely on it solely for my protection needs. There are a number of standalone products that I use in conjunction with Kaspersky's security suite (I can provide a list, if you're interested).

As secuity suites go, to the best of my knowledge, none are free, but they don't have to cost an arm and a leg either. Notable online retailers (such as NewEgg and Amazon) will offer discounted pricing occasionally, so you may want to subscribe to a mailing list to keep abreast of the latest promotions. Example: I picked up a 3-user, 1-year license from NewEgg a few months ago for $25, and when I was vacationing in Ontario for the past two weeks, I picked up another 3-user licence at Future Shop for CDN $20 (which I'll use after my current licence expires).
