Yes....... It's an extension of the current technology, plus.... if it didn't, nobody would buy one.

99% of current and old movies are only made in 2-D. Yes 2-D movies will be released for decades just like black and white movies are still around in a color world. Not all black and white movies are colorized do to cost and quality issues. Most 2-D movies will not be upconverted to 3-D do to cost and quality issues.

In the future maybe 90% or more of the movies released in the theater might be filmed in 3-D. Then 3-D will start to become more popular in the home in 2012 and beyond.

For at least a decade every new 3-D film will also have a 2-D version in theaters and for all new BLU-RAY releases.

2-D will be around for decades since there is around 100 years of films shot in 2-D.

i just read in an article that toshiba's new tv utilizing the a cell processor will be able to convert 2d to 3d pictures automatically.

so it may be that we can have our cake and eat it too once the newer sets roll out with this sort of technology 3-5 years from now.

Do you seriously think a processor is going to be able to do something the human brain can barely do? It has no reliable way of determining depth, this will be an embarrassment for Toshiba.

This is like trying to get a Color TV to convert black and white TV programs to color. Converting 480i programs to 1080P does sometimes offer some improvements when upconverting. Both Samsung and Toshiba plan on offering 3-D displays that upconverts 2-D programs to 3-D. The results most the time will be poor. The best way to convert 2-D programs to 3-D is for studios to spend 10 million dollars or more on each movie and convert the movie from 2-D to 3-D using computers to mark the amount of depth in each scene for each object.

I predict that most consumers will switch the 2-D to 3-D conversion off on all Toshiba and Samsung TV's since the original native 2-D image will be better quality. A 3-D display if done correctly with the correct original 3-D frame rate can produce good 3-D effects in a dark room if a native 3-D program is played.

this isn't really going to take off anyway until they get 3d without glasses. really the point is moot. i wouldn't wear glasses at home either.

theater yes, because at least the field of view is almost entirely encompassing, but at home on my 42 incher, where I sit 8 to 10 feet away...naw.

3d coming out of that would seem a bit gimmicky and silly to me. besides, i've never really had upgrade-itis, and won't be buying a new tv anytime soon until this one i have bites the dust, ...or wh10 years from the point of purchase comes along.
