Default Why are there not many movies about knights & dragons?

So my 2.5 year old son is heavy into knights and dragons. He has a growing collection of Papo & Schleich stuff. We got Disney's Sleeping Beauty for him.

Then I start to realise that there just aren't a lot of medieval movies about dragons, and knights. There's really only 1 live action and its' the severely dated Dragonslayer.

With today's technology, I'd really love to see more fantasy movies. I mean, I don't get why we don't have a lot as it is between all the D&D pen & paper stuff, World of Warcraft, etc.

We have plenty of WWII flicks, plenty of flicks about animals (from Mickey Mouse and Bambi to Madagascar and Bug's Life)..plenty of sci-fi flicks...

So what's the deal? Why are there not many movies about dragons when they are as popular as space ships and tanks?

Dragonheart is such a good film. I hope it comes out on BD in Australia soon.

Mathew McConaughey as Vin Diesel before Vin Diesel was cool... {which has YET to happen}

No.

I'd say that blame lies squarely with the Dungeon's and Dragons movie.

No, I'd say it lay pretty danged squarely with "Dragonheart".

And the old-school purists who said Dragonslayer did it better WITHOUT CGI, Sean Connery, or ear-bendingly corny dialogue. By which point, the D&D Movie and Eragon were practically afterthoughts (ie. "Oh, what, those things again??")

(And yes, I know the OP already knows about the movie from his earlier thread, but hey: It was the reason. )

I suppose the reason there aren't any dragon movies is because dragons aren't real. Sure, there are movies about other mythical creatures (i.e. vampires, vampires and vampires), but I think dragons are just a little shop-worn.

Ok may I suggest getting ready for "How To Train Your Dragon" in theaters in March in 3D. I also would suggest Sword and the Stone for your son. It's a little dated and not on blu but still a good film with similar elements.

I love Pete's Dragon. Don't we'll ever see it come to Blu, but theres always hope.

As for knight movies? Excalibur has always been a fav of mine. and as I understand, it will making it's way onto Blu this year. But then again, thats more for adults based on a couple scenes there.

(Am I the only one, btw, whose theater accidentally put the big display for "How to Train Your Dragon" too near the alcove with the restrooms?--
Prompting unfortunate jokes about "But I already know how to....ohh, 'Train', never mind!")

"Dragonslayer" suddenly came to mind; I thought it was pretty cool. Might be a bit too graphic and intense for a little kid though.

"Sleeping Beauty" had the dragon and knight fight at the very end, but it was a very short scene.

Other than that, and what's already been mentioned, I gotta agree that fantasy movies about dragons (or fantasy movies in general) are in short supply.
