Default Restoring the proper aspect ratio on PS3?

I just got my PS3 yesterday. I tried watching District 9. Apparently the official aspect ratio is slightly wider than a normal widescreen's, so there are supposed to be the black bars on top of the image. For some reason, the image on my TV seems to be "zoomed" in, filling the screen and thus cropping out some of the image.

Here's an example:

This is how the screenshot *should* look, according to this site.

Blu-ray.com - Screenshot

With my TV, there are no black bars and the subtitles are at the very bottom with the edges cut off. It's not the end of the world but I would like to watch the film in its proper aspect ratio. I can take a picture of how it looks in comparison if that makes a difference.

Is there any way to fix this? For what it's worth, I have a PS3 with a controller (no remote). I was told to change the aspect ratio from the TV menu, but that only works on SD and not HD.

The only thing I can think of is you're not using HMDi and your PS3 isn't set to display full HD.

I have an HDMi cable and my TV is 1080i. Does that make a difference? Sorry, I'm new to the whole thing.

Well you may have your TV zoomed in, check the manual if you need to and keep changing the viewing property of your TV until you can see everything being sent to your TV from the PS3. Oh and get a remote for the PS3, it'll make it much easier to watch movies. There should be some with a free blu included, look for one of those.

Sounds like the problem is a setting in your TV, not the PS3. But to be sure, go into your PS3's menu settings and make sure you've selected 720p and 1080i as output resolutions. Once you're sure that your PS3 is outputting in HD over HDMI, you have to check your TV's settings. Look for something like the zoom function in your TV's menu settings and see if you can set it to Normal or Full Pixel.

Thanks everyone, I'll try giving that a look.

But just in case I didn't describe it properly, this is what I'm talking about.

That is definitely the zoom on your TV. See if you can find an option to move it to Normal or Full Pixel.

Note: Not all TVs have this ability. My older Samsung DLP 1080i TV did not have an option to change it, and all of my 1.85:1 movies did what you're experiencing.

What brand and model is your TV?

Many older and low-end HDTVs have undefeatable overscan. Horrible engineering, really.

Slightly off topic but PS3/District 9 related. I popped my copy of D9 into my PS3 for the first time the other day and a message came on the screen saying I needed a firmware update to play the disc and would I like to proceed? The D9 disc proceeded to update my PS3 system from 2.something to 3.01
Is this a normal occurence with some blu ray discs to offer you a firmware upgrade? Anyone else?

Default 16:9 enhanced

Do you have the following in the menu -> setup ->16:9 Enhanced? Have you tried setting it to On? I had strange aspect issues with my Wega. It always worked well until I hooked it up to a Toshiba progressive DVD player. It would never work in Auto (16:9 enhanced) after that. I always had to turn it on manually when watching an anamorphic DVD.

I don't believe I ever needed to set it to on for a Blu-ray, though. But, it's worth a try since you're using component video, correct?
