I have the same issue, that thread didn't really help much. Anyway my copy was bought from JB Hifi here in Oz. I've returned it twice all copies have the "flashing" issue as described by original message. Grain doesn't bother me too much, but the low-light shots for this film, well the quality is almost like a hatch pattern on the screen.
I actually stopped watching the first time through as it was so bad - never done that before. Other Blu-Rays look great so It's not my setup just this film. I thought Highlander was bad (since traded), but this is worse. Perhaps we got a bad print here in Oz. Last edited by moggyman; 01-15-2010 at 03:03 AM. |

Public Enemies was shot with digital video cameras, and there is very strong noise during the low-light shoots (for example, the night shootout out in the woods). This is normal and the way the film looks. HOWEVER, there are also more serious picture quality problems that some have reported - most notably a cross-hatch or "chickenwire"-like pattern that covers the whole screen in certain scenes. This is not how the film is supposed to look, BUT it is not the result of faulty discs. People with discs from the US, UK, and Australia have all reported this. After much testing, it was narrowed down to a TV settings issue. Some users saw improvements after lowering or minimizing the "Sharpness" levels on their TV. Others saw improvements by making sure no scaling was being done by the TV. Even the extremely small amount of scaling to go from 1080p-Normal to 1080p-Full (basically, getting rid of overscan and making sure one-to-one pixel mapping was enabled) was enough to cause this problem with this disc. It's tough to say EXACTLY what settings to change as every TV is different, but we are now sure that the discs are fine and it's just the odd noise patterns of this film that cause certain TV algorithms and settings to react oddly. Hope that helps. |

I doubt it's a "bad print". People everywhere are reporting similar issues and it sounds like the way the movie was shot exacerbates bad TV settings. Not sure about flashing lights or whatever, but someone on AVS reported that setting his display to dot-by-dot mode got rid of the grid patterns, give that a go if your TV can do it.
