Default The Aviator early but no Polar Express

The Aviator (which I thought comes out on Nov 6) is at my local Circuit City (Houston TX). but Polar Express was nowhere to be found. Both are movies a buy for me. I picked up the Aviator and will still be on the lookout for the Polar Express. Christmas comes earlier every year. GO BLU

Side Not: I was in Tweeter last week and they had the motion chairs set up for the Aviator. Now that’s an experience.

I have The Aviator on order from amazon. Would you let us know if the Blu version no longer has the blue (not blu, blue) golf course grass and the blue peas at dinner? The regular DVD had each of these color problems and my best friend felt each kinda ruined the movie experience for him (yeah, it's picky, I know; but I hope the Blu version has corrected these two wierd color anomalies--I mean, who'd eat blue peas or play golf--non-minature golf--on a blue golf course?).

Those weren't anomalies, they were conscious choices by Martin Scorsese. He was elbow-deep in the color palette throughout that film. If it really bothered you now would be the time to cancel. I for one can't wait.

Our BB is perfect when it comes to release dates, but they very good about stocking titles. We have Polar Express but we want to watch it sometime mid December.

I plan on picking up Rat and Aviator this Tuesday

Yep. And it added a nice feel to the movie. I love the club scene in the opening. The sound of the music is fantastic.

It's not supposed to look and feel like 2007.

This is one of my favorite films (seen it probably 40-50 times).

Can't WAIT!

I didn't have as much of a problem with it as my friend did. For me it was simply odd and made me wonder what was going on. Otherwise, the rest of the film was great. Not only a remarkable character study, but a great film about aviation.

Nah, I won't cancel. Besides, I already gave away my SD version, and I really want to see that silver aircraft and the beet field, and all those rows of TWA Connies in Hi Def!

I bought the Aviator at Best Buy tonight. They put out stuff early every once in a while...I didn't really expect this to be put out though. I was hoping for Oldboy, but no luck.

Sorry for the crappy image quality...I only have my iPhone at the moment...

I'll check it out in a minute and report back with my thoughts.

It looks good, but I would kill to see WB use some high bitrate AVC transfers.

The sound's a disappointment, to say the least. Lossy DD ain't cutting it anymore.

Thre blue grass was pretty cool in that movie. I know what the director was going for and he did achieve it.

The color set the "mood" for the era. If the grass was pure green, it would have not felt right. Along with the other colors in the movie.

Really good. I might pick it up.

"The Aviator" is a great movie.

Cate Blanchett was damn-near perfect as Katharine Hepburn.

As others have said it's not an anomaly, that's the way it should look. I'll explain. The director wanted the scenes on the film to look as being done in the color film processes available at the time the action on the history was happening. So that's why those scene's greens look blue, because at the time , instead of full RGB color (three-strip Technicolor process) there was only the two-strip CO (kind of a blue/cyan-orange/red palette) Technicolor process.

With RGB you can have any color within the RGB triangle, but with 2-strip Technicolor you can only have a line of color values between the two primary colors, so you get bluish cyan going through neutrals (greys, blacks, and whites), reaching orangeish reds at the other extreme. Those were chosen so at least you could have more or less normal skin tones (which are basically orange in a chromatic map) and blue skys (which are more like a cyan blue than pure blue)

Here's a great article on the web from American Cinematographer with sample pics of how the film was processed to get the 2-strip and 3-strip Technicolor hues "look" (3-strip Technicolor was capable of very saturated primaries) if you want further info.

I just picked up the Aviator at CC (yes early I know) and have it playing now. If anyone is upset about blue peas and grass, get ready because every scene has a strong blue tint now(except the black & white scenes ). I don't remember this much blue on the SD DVD, but on the Blu version Scorsese wanted blue..........................he got Blu.

When I put the SD in my Oppo 981HD converter, it looked great. And the blue REALLY came out.

I'm going to bet that the BLU version is only a slight improvement.

Keep looking, it's out there. I was in my local Target this evening and they had all three versions (DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray) on their holiday movies endcap display.
