Default How do you rent on the PSN: SD or HD?

I tried renting in HD and it's nice and all, but honestly, renting in SD works better for me for 3 reasons: (1) the PS3 upscales it to HD anyways, which looks nearly as good as the HD download with ok sound, (2) it's cheaper and (3) since it's SD, the file is smaller, so it takes much less time to download.

What do you do?

Not the best in the world but there are some benefits over other choices: I don't have to plan ahead and wait for the mail and I don't have to drive to blockbuster, which is even more expensive, or to the nearest redbox, praying all the way there that (1) they have a copy in the machine and (2) it isn't scratched.

Most SD rentals are $2.99-$3.99 and shows for $1.99, so not terribly expensive. Small price to pay for the convenience of renting from your living room at any time day or night IMO.

Now, if the PSN offered a reasonably-priced, subscription-based service a la Netflix...

They do (Netflix themselves).

IIRC if you already have a Netflix acct it's free, otherwise it's a few dollars/month.

It didn't even occur to me to try SD, I always reach for HD.

My wife is convinced something is broken because it takes a few hours to download an HD file.

Right, but the PSN's video content is not offered in such a package. If it were, I might just as soon cancel my Netflix account.

Try it out. Like I said, the PS3 upscales it to HD anyways, which I always thought funny and for all intents and purposes of a rental, works just fine.

Oh I see. I don'thave Netflix. So there's stuff in the PSN that Netflix doesn't carry? I thought Netflix was bigger and would cover anything the PSN offered.

I rented The Terminator in SD to see what it looked like, I was very pleased with the pic quality; I'd be happy to rent in SD again; only 1.6Gb too

For some reason my downloads from the movie store still take an absolute age, but that's another story.

Ignoring the speed to download, I like this service and for rental both SD and HD are great.

Rent in SD. Your PS3 will upscale the PQ anyways.

Mine downloads pretty fast, but I have fios. IIRC only takes 10-20mins.

Not quite the same. I would try it but they STILL haven't opened a video store in Canada

My Blockbuster is literally 3 minutes away though, I'd much rather go rent a BD for $5 over any DD medium.

I agree it's not the same, but my point is it's close enough so that it's worth to do that (SD) over renting in HD (PQ anyway, you don't get the audio upgrade). Strictly my opinion of course

Nothing beats renting a blu

You don't have a video section in the PSN in canada?!?

Seriously +1. I'm not sure why anyone rents through their service considering that it is: 1) Expensive 2) Slow. Really I have no reason to ever use them as a rental service.

I should've included an option for "I don't rent from PSN", didn't realize so many never use it.

I think I'm still used to blockbuster $5 prices. I gota start looking at cheaper alternatives

My SD rental was £2.49 which is about $4 and I downloaded it overnight

I then had two weeks to watch it. As it turned out I watched it two days before it expired. I then moved it to my PSP to watch some of it again during lunch break at work; try doing that with a disc
