I currently have the Sony 710 and the Onkyo 606. The sound and features much better on the 606 than the 710. I know that's not a fair comparison though since the Sony you are looking at is a model above and a model newer than the Sony I have.

I have the Sony 820 and I can tell you I'm very satisfied with it, handles my 7.1 setup exactly as I need it to. And I bought it retail at $399, $150 is a damn good deal.
I dont have an opinion about the Onkyo though, since I don't have any experience with it. Good luck! |

STAY AWAY FROM THE ONKYO 606 !!!
![]() I had this receiver and after only 8 months this puppy went to hell in hand basket. I and countless other experienced the same exact problem. When I was looking for this receiver I remember that it had 0 bad reviews on Amazon.com and if you go now you will see 20+ 1 star reviews and everybody describing the same problem. The HDMI blows out after 8 months, there are various threads all over the net regarding this piece of faulty equipment. If you wanna read on it just google : Onkyo 606 PS3 problem and it will lead you to any informacion you may need. I also do not want to sound like a prick cause I dont know who on here is trying to sell it... But he might be doing it for a reason. Here is the link to the Onkyo 606 Amazon product page : http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR606...3862066&sr=8-2 Average Customer Rating 4.2 out of 5 stars (311 customer reviews) 5 star: (177) 4 star: (80) 3 star: (18) 2 star: (14) 1 star: (22) Some of the titles from the 22 horrible reviews ( and it has already gone up by 2 since I last checked). Poor Quality Control Stopped Working After 1 year Didn't work out for me Buzz/hum at 1080P and LPCM audio through HDMI Great for a while Worked great! For about 8 months! Works great for awhile, then progressively gets worse Great for a year Problems with HDMI output Great while it works BUT...., Worked great and then HDMI Croaked Nice until it breaks in a year Video died handshake issue with Motorola cable box Does not work after a year or so Usuable....For a while Yamaha for the same price would be better off for you buggie Don't buy this receiver!!! Both are pretty good entry-level receivers, however, the Onkyo 606 does offer video upconversion (via the Faroudja chip) if you need this capability. The Sony 820 does not.
For the record, I know a few people with the Onkyo 606, and they are very happy with it. I say this even being a huge Sony fan, myself. Up until my Pioneer SC-05, every prior home theater receiver I have ever owned has been a Sony. |

Here is a link to a thread regarding the Onkyo 606 HDMI problem. Also if you go to google and start typing : Onkyo 606
Google will drop the most popular searches that start with that and one of them is Onkyo 606 HDMI problem. AVS Forums : http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1141824 |

I have had 2 Sonys, 2 Onkyos, 1 Denon and 1 Yamaha. I like Onkyo. Here is my very general impression...
Lowest cost- Sony Cost no concern- Denon Best bang for the buck- Onkyo The only one that ever crapped out on me was a Sony. |

Stay away from 606!!!
The support at Onkyo is terrible, my receiver is in the shop for HDMI problems and was told it takes 4-6 weeks because of Onkyo. I know the 606 has many more features than the Sony but in the end, it's not worth it. If I were you, I'd go for another receiver, the 710 is not enough to enjoy the Bluray experience. |

I contacted Onkyo customer service only once....via email. They called me the next day and were very helpful and answered all of my questions. I sure don't have a complaint. Actually, I was very impressed. I have a TX SR806 and a TX SR876. They both work great.

Given that it is one of the most popular HT receivers out there, it's not unusual that you would find some negative reviews about it; but the vast majority of the reviews are very positive. I've had mine almost since release with zero HDMI issues.
