Just wonder why they boasts of "First time on a Blu-Ray format" if no HD content there?

This seems to be a european public domain release, i.e. the label did not license the material but then also did not have access to the original material but compiled it from previously available releases. So it might have been upscaled from DVD. The european jazz CD reissue market is full of such releases, mostly coming from Spain.

I don't have this, but I have the material on DVD

http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Masters-V.../dp/B00008V6YW

It looks hardly better than this Youtube video

These shows were not caught on film, so there will never be a "HD-worthy" reissue.

Quote:
As “The Sound of Jazz” was presented live, there was no opportunity for a repeat broadcast. Apparently, CBS had a kinescope recording of the show, but it was lost by the mid-60s. There are at least two surviving sources of the show, one of which is said to be Herridge’s copy. The show appeared without a copyright notice and has been considered public domain material for many years.

Thanks for your response Miles, will probably get it because of Billie Holiday.

Anyone pick this up? I ordered from Amazon US based on some reviews of the BD PQ being improved from the DVD. Of course Amazon is out of stock, so hopefully this is not actually OOP.

I have it. Lots of great stuff on it, but I wouldn't bother if you already have all of it on DVD. It still looks like a DVD.

I probably have about a third of it on several different DVDs. Did you have it previously on DVD? A couple of the Amazon reviewers said it was better PQ than the DVD, but due to the source material it is never going to look very good.

I didn't have the DVDs, but the improvement of quality over the DVD is likely to be in the area of bandwidth rather than the source elements or transfer. The blu-ray is as good as it's ever going to look. It appears that they evened out some of the brightness problems, but the sharpness is what it is. If you only have a third of the content here, then the answer is simple. Get it. Every single thing on this disk is golden and will have your jaw resting on the floor.

Cool, hopefully my backorder at Amazon gets filled. Really love the jazz of this era, two of my favorite sax players in Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young and favorite jazz singer with Billie Holiday. Looking forward to it.

So Amazon US cancelled my order on this a couple of weeks ago. Anyone have an idea on whether this might get reissued? Seems like they were only selling for about a year, but they were gone when I noticed. So at least someone bought them.

I have been watching a lot of concerts lately and just did another search seeing if this had been reissued anywhere worldwide. I have DVD and love it. Although knowing this was never filmed and would never look good, I have looked at some fan made machine learning upscale from DVDs to something looking like HD (mainly thinking of some Star Trek DS-9 efforts I watched from you tube on my pj with 120 inch screen that looked passable). It makes me wonder if someone could ever do anything with this show, which is the finest jazz concert by far I have ever seen, to make it look less hideous.
