It's hard to shake the memory of Joaquin Phoenix slumping in David Letterman's guest chair last year as the late night host told the audience, "Well, Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight." After being chided for refusing to coherently engage and for chewing gum (which he later plastered under Letterman's desk), it didn't help that he also looked like a grizzled mess beneath his wild beard, long hair and dark shades.

After the bizarre television appearance last year, Joaquin disappeared from the public eye, but it appears things have changed for the Oscar-nominated actor. He is back with a new look, and an unexpected companion: Miley Cyrus. Phoenix teamed up with Cyrus and Liv Tyler for a video that benefits To Write Love on Her Arms, a charity that aims to help people struggling with self-injury, compulsions, suicide, depression and addiction. (Joaquin's brother, River Phoenix, died of a drug overdose in 1993.)

The video begins with an awkward introduction followed by Joaquin being ambushed by Cyrus, who teaches him about computers, Facebook and Skyping. If only she could still introduce him to Twitter.

Perhaps this is a signal that Joaquin will be back for more than this good deed. In 2008, he said he was retiring from acting to pursue a hip-hop career. According to an E! News interview with musical collaborator Julian Shah-Taylor, Joaquin is "a Beatles, Oasis, Bowie-style songwriter."

Unfortunately, though Shah-Taylor posted one song, the eight tracks they recorded in 2007 were never released and the best chance of hearing them may be in Casey Affleck's upcoming documentary about the unpredictable artist, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in the 2005 movie, "Walk the Line."

I was positive after his Letterman performance it was an act, but nearly a year has gone by and this is his first appearance, and he still seemed really weird. Guess he did just flip his lid and go gary busey.
