Default Greedy Thieves at Disney

I can't help but notice how little has been discussed about the "merger" between Disney & 20th Century Fox!! Did we all forget that Fox filmed some of the finest ever in their over 100 year history? So what did Disney do about such history? They fired over 5,000 employees and locked up (or as they put it, "vaulted" many of the greatest treasures in American Film history! Have they no shame? My hopes were that they would re-master & release such gems. No way!
I am, though, very pleased & excited that Paramount & Sony are doing just that with their new "Paramount Presents" & Columbia divisions akin to what WB did with Archives. They're giving it their best shot and deserve all the support they can get from all of us. Of course there's always a negative in the mix: WB new CEO isn't a fan of Archives, so let's prove him wrong. In the past few years Archives has been releasing some of the most glorious re-masters ever..i.e. "Showboat" , many of Doris Day's best, etc. Let's give him a push!
I apologize for getting on my soap box, but unless more of us do, the future will look grim.

LOL hard to call Disney greedy if they aren't profiting off their aquisition. sucks for us but they clearly are more interested in having content for their streaming service over physical. get used to it i'm sure we will see a lot more of that in the years to come

I've read that Disney is really trying to squeeze every penny right now. Well, more than usual. Business ethics 101 under new management with Bob Chapek.

Aren't they all pretty much greedy thieves though? And I wish I could give Paramount Presents a pass and give them as high a praise as I would virtually any WAC release, but I've already been disappointed with PP's tinkering with some of their releases of my favorite films. At this point, you get what you get and that's about it. Otherwise we'd find reason to complain about the majority of it.

I'd love to see a UHD of Showboat, the colors on that are insane and clearly clipped by the limited color palette of blu-ray. Amzing restoration though, looks more detailed and you are there than most releases including for recent films shot on ultra def digicams.

That's bad to hear the new WB guy is not a fan of the archives collection, that's ridiculous and a bit of a disgrace.

How dare those greedy thieves not re-release stuff & make more money! Seriously, this is all old news, reads like the rantings of someone who just woke up from a coma. The WB Archive situation already corrected itself, they rehired the guy who had been in charge previously (George Feltenstein) & gave him more control over things.

Well here’s a option: stop supporting Disney. They DON’T CARE about physical media and that’s a fact. Move on.

Know this is probably said before, but how is locking movies up in a vault and not releasing them "making money"?

If anything it's preventing them from making money.

If they don't think certain catalog titles are going to make a lot of money, then they focus on the moneymakers, where the easy money is

Still, at the very least, they should license them out to boutique labels to have an official release out there.

If there's a hole in terms of official releases, bootleggers are just gonna swoop in and fill it up. At least have a MOD service like Warner Archive or something...

Disney figured out that by “vaulting” and then periodically releasing movies, it creates higher demand, increasing sales when they do release one of these movies and cuts their costs in having a vast library of physical media to continually warehouse.

Now that they have moved to streaming, they figured out that limiting physical releases drives subscriptions to their service and makes them more money than they would from physical media.

They make more money either way.

I’m sorry, but bootleggers are going be making money from what? Where are these mythical bootlegs that are making all this money? This conversation sounds several decades out of date.

I was thinking about this just the other day while I was revisiting The Predator. Unless they change their mind, we will likely never see further physical media releases of 20th Century Fox titles. EVER. Saddens me beyond belief, but it just makes me angry more than sad - and worried. Who's to say Disney won't find a loophole to acquire more studios/film libraries? I breathed a huge sigh of relief when it was Amazon who purchased MGM and not Disney, even though I knew anti-monopoly laws would prevent Disney from picking up another studio. When these studios were started 100 years ago, they were created by film FANS first and foremost - people who actually love film as a medium for entertainment and not just profit. All those film pioneers are probably rolling in their graves in despair knowing that what they started is being slowly taken away and locked away in a vault

Which also means they own Buffy the vampire slayer and angel and will never do anything with those titles which is sad but it’s probably also because of joss whedon. which makes me mad that he ruined any chance of them getting a proper hd remaster on blu ray.

How did Whedon stop them from getting released?

Best hope for Fox titles is that Disney starts to license them out to Kino and others. I doubt they would be as protective or 'vaulting' Fox titles as they would true Disney titles like say, Snow White.

So many people are focusing the blame on Chapek, but lets not forget who abandoned ship just as the shite was hitting the fan.

I'm assuming they're referring to what Whedon did to his own career.
