I personally would go with the Pioneer Elite since I have a preference for Pioneer Elite. I have owned two Pioneer Elite receivers and have been very happy with both of them. I currently have a Pioneer VSX 45TX Pioneer Elite which is 3 or 4 generations ago from their current lineup. Even though I don't have all the HDMI hookups I'm would not get rid of the receiver.

According to my friend who use to work in the AV industry at the high end AV store here in town, he told me he and others he worked with wished they bought the VSX 45TX receiver. Some bought Marantz and Integra but they said they never had one complaint about the Pioneer. My friend even recommended me to buy another one just because. I have 2 other friends who own the same receiver and they both still use it today.

If I may ask what is your price range because I think you may be able to buy the VSX 21 or 23 for about $500-$600. It also depends on what your ultimate goals is down the road for you HT. Please ask any questions you may have. I would be more than happy to help you anyway I can. If I don't the answer, I will steer you in the right direction with one of the guys here on the forum.

Hope that helps you a little bit and as I said don't be aftaid to ask any questions.

Garry

That Pioneer is not an Elite model and I've read where it didn't bench-test very well power wise. I don't have the link handy but it's been posted several times before on this forum. If you search around a little I'm sure you'll be able to find it.

My mistake fireman is correct for basically for the same price of the 1019 you can get a Elite 21TXH. Several guys here have the 21TXH and I know they are very happy with it.

Why the attack? All I did was state the 1019 isn't an Elite model (which is a FACT), and that it didn't bench test very well power-wise. I also dug up the link for the test so here it is.

http://hometheatermag.com/receivers/...er/index4.html

If you don't like the results you can take it up with Pioneer or the people who did the testing.

Never did I say whether it's a good or bad receiver. I leave that for the owners to decide.

Both are quality models of very good brands.
I suggest listening to both and buying the one that you think sounds best.
That is what I just did before buying the Elite 21. I compared Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer models of similar prices at a local Magnolia. After nearly 2 hours of auditioning I felt the Pioneer sounded better. I had also done my homework on the models I was interested in. I got specks from their websites to compare/contrast, I also did Google searches for reviews on the models. Last but not least I did forum searches for the models on this site and 2 others I like and even after all that homework it was my ears that told me what to do.
I went with my ears and have no complaints at all.

I agree with what Winters said, try and listen to all of them if you can. Even though they may sound a little different because when you audition them, the speakers may be different from what you may have, it's better than nothing. I looked hard at the 1019 and 1910, and liked the Denon features, look, and sound better than the Pioneer (all personal preference). Plus, I got a fantastic deal on a new 1910, so that helped me make my decision too

I wouldn't go with the Denon unless you're really going to use it for upconverting over analog sources:

http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...?tag=mncol;lst

You're best bet is to go with the Pioneer (it got a editors choice award from cnet):

http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...?tag=mncol;lst

Keep in mind that novices might have some problems since the Advanced controls can be difficult to setup and it has a confusing manual.

On a personal note, I might go for the Pioneer for me over the Onkyo TX 707.

I'd take the C-net's reviews with a grain of salt and would look instead to user reviews posted on Amazon and feedback posted on AVS's forum. Both of which are full of praise for the Denon model. The Pioneer is also highly regarded but seems to have more issues.

I agree. They do do some testing and for their video upscaling they tend to get that right, but I would hardly think of them as hardcore audiophiles and they don't bench test the models which you see more at HT mag, Audioholics, etc. If you are going on features and sound, and video scaling, then I'm sure you can love all over their reviews, however they don't measure audio performance, which is what the receiver is there to do, not just act as an HDMI switcher.

For $600 have you considered Marantz at all. Accessories4less has the SR5004 for $599.

Woooooooooo!!!The Pioneers got the cnet editor award. So what. Denon 1910 has won the What Hi fi Awards (best product of the year)....Again it's all about personal preference. Just do a side by side comparison and buy what you like. My buck is on the Denon

I bought a Denon 1910 to replace my Denon 887 and I mean no offence to people who own (and like) it but it deserves no awards. It was extremely weak and the processing created strange sounds from the surrounds.

I returned it and bought a Marantz sr6003. It was amazing for stereo but during simulated surround I heard a lot of sibilance. Sent that back and got a Pioneer Elite. For my ears it is the best receiver I have ever heard.

Just my opinion and experience.

Well have you checked Amazon. I just found this on Amazon. But it looks like it is a used on from their site. They also have the 23 for $619 and that is for a new receiver. I don't know if you want to go that route. But that is your option maybe you can check on Amazon for the Denon as well. But as others have said you should demo both before buying let you ears tell you which one is the right receiver for your situation and room.

You could always get a Pioneer VSX-9040TXH for less. Its suppose to be the Canadian version of the Pioneer Elite VSX-21THX. I checked the price and it is on sale for under $500.00.
