Warner Bros Gold Diggers of 1933 coming from WAC

Quote:
COMING SOON!
NEW 2022 1080pHD Master from best preservation elements!
GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933
BD50
B&W
Aspect Ratio 16x9 1.37 with SIDE MATTES
Audio Specs DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 MONO
97 Minutes
SPECIAL FEATURES: Featurette-“F.D.R.’s New Deal: Broadway Bound”, Vintage Warner Bros. Cartoons “I’ve Got to Sing a Torch Song” (HD), “Pettin’ in the Park” (HD), “We’re In the Money” (HD),
Vintage Warner Bros. Shorts “Rambling Round Radio Row”, “The 42nd St. Special” “Seasoned Greetings”
A Broadway producer has the talent, the tunes, the theater and everything else he needs to put on a show – except the dough. Not to worry, say Ginger Rogers and the other leggy chorines decked out in giant coins. Everyone will soon be singing “We’re in the Money.” Soon after 42nd Street, the brothers Warner again kicked the Depression blues out the stage door and into a back alley. Mervyn Le Roy directs the snappy non-musical portions involving three wonderfully silly love matches (including Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler). And Busby Berkeley brings his peerless magic to the production numbers, his camera swooping and gliding to showstoppers that are naughty (“Pettin’ in the Park”), neon-lit (“The Shadow Waltz”) and soul-searing (“Remember My Forgotten Man”). Solid cinema gold!

Can anyone explain the purpose of having "Aspect Ratio 16x9 1.37 with SIDE MATTES" rather than simply an aspect ratio of 1.37?

Great news! I saw this on TCM recently and I thought the transfer looked great and hoped WA would release it and now here it is.

It does make sense. The shape of our monitors is 16:9, & the shape of HD is roughly 16:9, so to show a 1.37 image, you need black lines down the sides (just like with 2:35 you need black lines top & bottom).

You could say every Blu-ray release is 16:9: 1.37, 1:85, 2:35, 2:76, they're all contained in a 16:9 shape.

Right, I guess it does make sense in terms of what's going on, although I've never seen it stated in such terms before. Also, when I think of "mattes," I think of covering up part of an image but not at the stage of the display monitor producing the black bars.

But I just noticed the announcements for today's other WAC titles say the same thing, so I guess it's just WAC's (new?) way of saying "1.37" - so it's all good.

That's interesting. George Feltenstein was just making passing reference to this title a couple months or so ago on The Extras podcast, saying that he would hope that they could someday get this title out. It didn't sound like it was coming anytime soon and was more like a long-term goal.

This is my favorite of the Busby Berkeleys. So happy to see it getitng a new transfer. Frankly the one on iTunes wasn't bad, but an even better one on blu-ray is a day 1 buy for me.

He was talking about the sequel Gold Diggers of '35, because Lullaby of Broadway(1951) was released in November and '35 won an Oscar for that song, though I understand the confusion.

Anyone with an educated guess as to what "best preservation elements" means here?

Almost definitely not an original negative. Probably a second-generation print or a combination of prints to some level.

Great surprise. I have never watched any of the Gold Diggers movies, but they have long been on my list. I seem to recall this was featured in that old film history documentary with Martin Scorsese? Is this the one with the "remember my forgotten man" song? I am very intrigued by that as it seems so much more political than what I have come to expect from Hollywood musicals.
