Default Do all new movies come in Blu-ray now?

Do all new Hollywood Movies come in Blu-ray now? I am asking because the movie I want to watch, The Canyon (2009) only comes in DVD but not Blu-ray. The movies didn't do well in theaters. Is it why they don't release it in Blu-ray?

With some exceptions, I'd say so. I think some movies with very limited releases may not, but I've also seen several that have. Basically, I think many, but not all new movies come out in Blu-ray now.

The Weinstein Company stopped producing Blu-ray Discs and thankfully Universal had home video distribution for Inglorious Basterds while Sony handled Halloween II (2009). Other Weinsten Company titles have yet to be released on Blu-ray Disc.

Paramount and Disney also released some new films on DVD only. It comes down to money in the end... if the studio/distributor feels that a movie did not do well in theaters or may not do well on home video, they will decide not to spare the expense of producing a Blu-ray Disc release.

I brought this up in a few other threads. There are still, unfortunately, a rather large amount of films not making it to blu-ray. Recently, as in the past 30 days, there were the following films that all had limited theatrical runs in the U.S. and got a DVD release, but no blu: Big Fan, Departures, Trucker, Adam, More Than A Game (sports doc. on LeBron James and his high school team), Bright Star, Cold Souls, The Boys Are Back, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell and Little Ashes, and a few upcoming notables are Good Hair and Everybody's Fine.

Hopefully, this practice doesn't continue too much longer. There are plenty out of those films I just listed that I would have purchase on blu-ray, were they available.

I agree man! I dont get why they wont get released. Ive seen much more limited released films with BAD reception get released on Blu.

Whats even weirder is PSN has most of those for rent in HD.

Many new to home video movies are still being skipped on Blu-ray by the studios, mostly for financial reasons. If the studio does not think a title will sell certain numbers, they will simply skip a BD version.

Many but far from all. It comes down to money.

Option 1) If you want a particular movie write the studio and request it. If enough people do this, than the studio may release it on Blu-ray.

Option 2) Offer to purchase 500,000 copies and the studio will produce it.

Option 2a) Partner with some company that has a product in the movie to reduce your costs.

I'm right there with you. Those are all the same exact titles I would've purchased on blu-ray. I'll just rent the DVDs.

There have been quite a few films that have been released on DVD, but not Blu recently.

Adam & Carriers are the two that have bothered me most. I wrote to Fox asking about Adam and never heard anything back, if I remember correctly the trailer had even said "Coming Soon to Blu-ray and DVD" and then it was released as rental only DVD followed by a retail DVD about a month later, with no Blu. I believe Carriers followed a similar schedule.

If they can release endless SyFy made for TV movies and "Blu cubes" (or whatever they are called,) I see no reason why they wouldn't be able to release at least a small pressing of every film released on DVD, because there will always be someone interested in picking it up.

Unless someone else picks it up, it may only get a DVD release. It didn't do very well at the box office.

it is really a shame that some new movies are not released on bluray!
everybody`s fine for examplel was a very good movie and will only get
a dvd treatment. maybe because miramax is bancrupt?
anyhow, at least sell the rights then if you don`t have the financial means
to release it properly yourself!

I know it pissed me off to no end to have to buy Fanboys on DVD when they should have easily had a Blu Ray release.

I am kinda forgiving at the moment because 1, it is still early in the game and 2, I just barely got into Blu Ray this past year anyways so I expected it to take a while for some movies to show up. I think by the end of this year or start of next year it should not be that way anymore, everything should be coming to Blu Ray by then. The best thing to do is buy the movies you like that are on Blu Ray and write letters to the studio in charge so they know there is a potential market for it. That is what I do, but I mostly buy catalog movies the last few years Hollywood has not been making too many movies I care about.

Still, pretty soon Companies will release all titles on Blu Ray too because of the penetration of Blu Ray and the fact the recent polls have shown the people who own Blu Ray Players normally don't purchase DVD's anymore..

Good point!

Blu-Ray sales are increasing steadily globally and hopefully dvd's are gowing down.
