Default Regular TV vs Blu-Ray/DVD Sound

I have an HD 720 LG 37" TV connected to a Dish Network DVR receiver. Also have a PS3 connected via HDMI cable to TV. When watching regular TV through Dish Network receiver, the sound is fine on 20 or so, but when watching a regular DVD or Blu-ray through PS3, I have to turn volume to 40+ to hear it?? Any thoughts why?

Also, a friend has the same issue, although they are using a Comcast DVR box connected to a Sony 27" HDTV via component cables, and a Sony Blu Ray connected to TV via an HDMI cable. Same problem....regular TV watching is on 20 or so, and when we watched a DVD this past weekend, we had to turn TV to over 50 for volume??

Thoughts?

Thanks much!

the audio on the TV is probably a bit more compressed (not digital compression, but volume compression) and has a narrower dynamic range. DVD/BluRay allows for a wider dynamic range, meaning the quiets can be quieter and the louds can be louder...

You're comparing two completely different inputs. Additionally, what Razor stated is correct as well- the dynamic range is much more compressed on digital cable/satellite- as a result "everything" is fairly loud with no earth-shattering explosions. BD meanwhile has a greater dynamic range, meaning that you'll get the highs and lows as they were intended and originally mixed. I would suggest calibrating with an SPL meter as well as forgetting what the dial says and turning it up until you're happy with it.

I typically play my BD's at a much higher volume than games and TV.
