A little off topic, but did anyone else catch the Breathless reference in The Daily Show with Jon Stewart the other day? Completely caught me off guard.

I'm going to see a 35mm theatrical showing of Breathless here in Atlanta at the Midtown Art Cinema on March 11. If any of you out there are attending this, drop me a line.

Such a great movie!

I've already booked my tickets for the 35 mm showing of Seven Samurai on March 4 and for the showing of Breathless. I'd like to catch the rest of them, but it's sort of a hassle to drive into the city on weeknights.

[Show spoiler]Tue, Mar 4: Seven Samurai (1954), directed by Akira Kurosawa. 35mm print!
Tue, Mar 11: Breathless (1960), directed by Jean-Luc Godard. 35mm print!
Tue, Mar 18: The 400 Blows (1959), directed by François Truffaut. 35mm print!
Tue, Mar 25: Solaris (1972), directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.
Tue, Apr 1: 8 1/2 (1963), directed by Federico Fellini. New digital restoration!
Tue, Apr 8: Beauty and the Beast (1946), directed by Jean Cocteau. New digital restoration!
Tue, Apr 15: A Woman Under the Influence (1974), directed by John Cassavetes. 35mm print!
No Screening Tuesday, April 22
Tue, Apr 29: Au Revoir les Enfants (1987), directed by Louis Malle. 35mm print!

I'd rather the original release without the DVD's. Is the original OOP?

That sounds like one hell of a theater that you have there! I'm jealous.

Remember when Criterion released this film on Blu-ray and then re-released it in a Dual Format edition?

Well now they're re-releasing it a third time without the DVD.

And they still haven't released an edition with a copy of the New York Herald Tribune from the summer of 1959 yet! Or a replica of Seberg's T-Shirt!

Does anyone know for sure if it's still a digi? Usually when they drop the dvd's don't they revert back to the plastic cases?

If anyone plans to purchase the re-re-release, can you please provide photos? Thanks!

Is the 4K edition worth the upgrade?

It certainly is an upgrade, but the Criterion disc is still no slouch.

So why do I keep hearing that near black levels are a mess on the 4K edition wherea they are more stable on the 1080p edition?

Not sure - personal tastes, maybe? While I can't comment on this particular case, some people thinks darker/blacker is always better, but it's not always the case. It depends on the film and the intended look. The screen caps comparison, to me, seems like the 4K has better contrast. Sorry I couldn't be of more help...

Quite the contrary this was a lot of help. I am yet to find a film which did not benefit at all from a 4K upgrade

Same. While Terminator 2 & Iron Man are a bit disappointing due to the grain scrubbing, personally I still find them the best presentations of the films on home video. And then you have Don't Look Now, Spartacus and It's a Wonderful Life which are revelations
