What's the best retro Sonic game?
I decided to count Mania because it's in the STYLE of Retro Sonic and set right after Sonic 3, same with Sonic 4 despite the 3D graphics. For me, it's Sonic 3. It had the best levels, gameplay and music until Sonic & Knuckles (which ironically came out later that same year), though I prefer Sonic 2's special stages. |

Sonic 3, and by that I mean Sonic 3 and Knuckles. It's obviously meant to be one game, though. Since the options are separate, I can't vote.
Sonic is actually the only character of anything I can draw from memory. I'm slightly foggier on Tails and especially Knuckles, since I didn't draw them as much as a kid. Last edited by Warm Gun; 06-20-2021 at 05:53 AM. |

That's easy. SONIC 2.
Moreover, what the heck is SONIC 4 doing on there? It's not a retro game. It's a modern game. Also, if anyone wants to play SONIC 4, just go with the Android or iOS version as the gameplay actually feels fast whereas on Consoles/PC it's sluggish for some reason. They gave us a crappy version of a half-assed game on Consoles/PC while phones and tablets had the superior version. Android and iOS still have the phenomenal remakes of SONIC, SONIC 2 and SONIC CD (and there was SONIC 3 & K, but canceled... though the developer may have finished it). |

I grew up with Sonic 1 & 2 so love them for nostalgia.
But I recently beat S3&K for the first time and it was absolutely epic! I think this is the best game. Could never get into CD, found the time travelling distracting. Mania is great but not quite as consistent as S3&K. |

CD’s levels are the definition of cluster****, I think. Not much rhyme or reason to it and the time travel thing wasn’t thought out too well - there’s no reason to ever go into the future, everything you need to do is in the past (and once you do it, you hardly have much time to go back to the present to then try to get to the future.) You can also just play the game like the previous 2 and get all of the emeralds for the best ending, so it’s really just the same Sonic with worse level design.
Sonic 2 and 3&K, the latter my favorite, are pretty far ahead of the rest. I should try Mania, it looks pretty cool. |
