hello all,

yesterday my wife & i got invited to a birthday party. the home had a great room with a home theater set up. a sharp tv on the wall with an onkyo surround sound "HTiB." house was on comcast's channel 234 in hd. but the sound was HORRIBLE!!! after 15 in hell, i asked jason (man of the house) if i could checkout his system. he had 2 channel output (analog) from cable box to 2 channel inputs to receiver. we switched from analog to digital and

we need to start the "HOME THEATER POLICE" squad!!!

85% of the restaurants / bar i go into have the tv's hooked up by coaxial cables. not component or hdmi.

most folks just need a little help.

Dude they dont care, they're not about to invest all that money into a TV

I think this is pretty funny. I bet it's not uncommon for "people like us" to come across these scenarios. I know I do all the time. I try not to impose too much, because as I see it, if they really did "care," they probably would have done something about it already. Know what I mean? Still, though, funny story...and one to which I can most definitely relate. My parets have had an HDTV in their house for almost as long as they've been out (we are talking YEARS here), but only just now got their Blu-ray player a few months ago. Ridiculous, but then again: to each his own.

It is funny, whenever I visit a friend's place for the first time, I always check out if they have all their A/V gear setup properly. Most people do not unless they had professional help. Usually I help them out and set them straight about the details and what they are doing wrong.

I try to help out when I can, I realize that some people are not into the a/v scene like some of us on the boards. I had a roommate who had a 55" Mits, a/v surround reciever (no speakers, everything through the TV), and a ps3 which was hooked up through the standard a/v cables. I wasn't in the house more than few days and I was rewiring with optical and setting up a 5.1 upgrade with my mains, center, surround, and powered sub.

I try not to do this unless I am asked to help. Some people have a lot of pride in their stuff, and if I point out something, they get insulted. So I just try and be polite.

I go to the dog park and everyone sits around talking BS and sometimes movies and TV's come up. Anyway, the people there think I'm some sorta "Wiz Kid" lol because I know a little more than the average joe! So funny.

This happens alot with me. I just tell the person they are not getting the full potental out of thier system. I have come across a few that just don't care and some that are interested.

I just hate when I get a call later with a two tons of questions.

I always ask if they think they are getting a better presentation than in a pillbox cinema. First, great room? I am sure the light control helped tremendously for the poor image presented by the minimal-contrast ratio the flat panel is offering.

Sounds like a media room, not a home theater.

Has anyone ever been visited by the Reno:911 Home Theater Police? I had a friend and his wife come over and we started watching Iron Man when the phone rang. About 15 minutes later I made it back to my theater and was greeted with, "I fixed your TV." I asked what was wrong and he said my TV wasn't bright enough.

He is just lucky that I had all my settings written down.

I like to help.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink does come to mind though. I have a neighbor (who is in 5th grade now) who has his PS3 hooked up to a HDTV with the composite video cable. I had a set of component cables extra but he wouldn't take them and said .... No, I have it hooked up right already.

I was able to update his PSP firmware at some point.

Everyone is different and some people don't care or don't understand how to get the most from things. And... that's ok too, I guess.
