The tech specs lists Dolby Digital and DTS decoder. But no mention of the HD codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA). Going solely off the spec sheet, I'm going to say no. It appears that lossy audio is the best this system can offer.

If you list what you are looking for in a speaker package and preferences for a receiver, as well as your budget, there are plenty of people on this site that can steer you towards some very good options. Nothing against HTiB's, as they are generally a good starting point for many people, but they typically don't offer most of the features you might want down the road. And to make matters worse, you can seldom just upgrade one or two pieces (usually you'll have to upgrade all of the components). Just a thought.

If you're wanting dtsHD Master Audio from an HTIB system, I'd say that this one is the minimum one to buy. Costs a little more than the Sony, but it does so much more too. I guess it boils down to how bad you want to get HD audio. Onkyo definitely makes the best HTIBs. http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S6200...0530270&sr=1-1
Good luck!

+1. If you go the HTiB route, Onkyo is definitely the way to go.

Yes you can, as long as your BD player decodes it. I have this unit hooked up to a Sony S360 BD player, in a small room it sounds great!

From CNet:
Quote:
Unlike some more expensive full-fledged AV receivers, the HT-SS360 doesn't have onboard decoding for the new high-resolution Blu-ray soundtrack formats, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. While that might have been an issue six months ago, it's less of an issue now that almost all new Blu-ray players have onboard decoding; you don't necessarily need a receiver with onboard decoding. The HT-SS360 does, however, have the standard assortment of Dolby and DTS sound decoding modes, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, and DTS.

The Onkyo might be better, but it cost more than twice the price $300 more

Honestly you wouldnt even be able to tell a differnce in the codecs on that system. Dont worry about it if you've only got $300 to spend.

Sure, which part? The part about lossy or the part about the benfit of not getting a HTiB if you plan to upgrade down the line?

If you set the soundfield on the Sony HT-SS360 to A.F.D. Standard, it will act as an amplifier and send the signal as decoded. So if you have a BD player that decodes DTS HD MA or TrueHD audio, it will provide lossless.

If you are planning on upgrading in the future, then yes, he should purchase something more upgradeable, but for $250, you be hard-pressed to find a better value than the Sony TT-SS360.

This is very true. IMO, you'd have to get into Hi-end stuff to really notice any difference at all between the DTS HD MA or TrueHD lossy and lossless.

It is also true for the Onkyo system recommended. However, music does sound better over the Onkyo.

Let's not launch that debate.

Keep in mind, I never said that buying this unit wasn't an ideal scenario for some people. I only wanted the OP to consider other factors. For the price, it may be a good deal for his needs. But if he has a larger budget to work with, there are certainly better options available. Not everyone knows about anything other than HTiB and consider HTiB's to be convenient because everything is in the box - and this is true. Just keep in mind that the features / capabilities on most HTiB's are also very limited with no option to upgrade without replacing everything. In that case, it actually turns out to be more expensive than buying separates to begin with and piecing together a nice system on your own. I'm trying to help the OP make an informed decision.

I agreed with you that if he was going to consider upgrading in the future, he should think of the Onkyo, but for the money, the Sony was a good deal, especially if he has a limited budget at this time. Five years down the road, a $1,000 system would sell for $500, so he wouldn't lose much if he had to scrap the Sony down the line.

No debates, just discussion. It's all good..

+1... best money I ever spent. Got it at NewEgg and got 6 months deferred payments on it as well and free shipping. I paid $549.99 but now it's @ 519.99 with $9.99 shipping.

But only via PCM HDMI so you need to be able to extract audio via HDMI. (not sure if the sony does you will have to look that up yourself)

As I said before........... the Onkyo is a little more expensive, but does so much more, it's well worth the difference. The onkyo includes a real receiver, decodes the HD audio formats, plenty of inputs, has Audyssey auto speaker calibration, very easy setup and use, and is very much upgradable when funds allow. Few HTIBs are really upgradable. The Onkyo has so much going for it, that the only things that would need upgrading in the future would be the speakers and subwoofer.

The weak link with any HTIB is the speakers and sub. They can't afford to give you real good speakers at an HTIB price. But considering it's an HTIB, the Onkyo's speakers and sub isn't bad at all. Quite a few people here owns the Onkyo 6200, and seem to like it very much. Onkyo gives a lot more bang for the buck, than most other HTIBs. Also with their separate receivers.

Was just throwing it out there for consideration. If the OP wants the Sony, more power to him. No skin off my teeth either way. When people mention they want the HD audio, I recommend the Onkyo HTIBs and receivers, because you get so much for your money.
Good luck OP, with whatever you get.............
