Watched this movie and thought it was entertaining... sometimes slow development with the story but that was to be understood giving the content. But up for an Oscar, best movie of the year, not by a long shot.

I have still yet to see this and I feel like I'm going to be in your shoes. I hear everyone say amazing things about this and over-hyping the crap out of it. I hope I like it.

At least outside of the movie itself, Avatar carries some significance for movie history. The Hurt Locker will be forgotten by April. |

![]() This is a great film btw...not my favorite of the year but in my top 5 for sure and yes much better than Dances with Avatar (might as well say that before the topic comes up). * Up in the Air is by far the best film of the year. But it will be forgotten very soon as some have said. Last edited by Elvis; 02-15-2010 at 03:10 AM. |

I thought it was a pretty good film overall. But I can see what you mean when you think it's a bit overrated. When I first saw it, I was expecting something different than what it was. But, as I kept thinking about the movie more and more, it grew on me. To each one's own I say when it comes to opinions.

In case anyone was wondering I voted for the third option. It's the same thing over and over and over again with no character development AT ALL. Worst movie of the year, and yes, that includes anything and everything done by Uwe Boll. Logan |

And the answer to the complaint of "Like, there's no plot!" is "It's a character study, Pauline Kael!": Platoon had a plotless "Endless tour-of-duty" diary structure, but the message on that one was War Is Bad-- Here, Kathryn Bigelow, who specializes in stories of adrenaline junkies (or, "What if Patrick Swayze from 'Point Break' had been drafted?"), gives us a non-plot that says, in the opening title, War Is A Drug. The other squad members think that Sgt. James is a complete psycho, and they may very well be right--Not everyone is cut out to prefer the adrenaline of risk and paranoia to the "boredom" of stateside home and family, [Show spoiler] .Don't think it'll win the Oscar--it's one of those Good Third-Places--but wouldn't mind if it did. |

Character studies still have plots, otherwise there's not much to learn about the character, and it ends up being a pointless movie. Oh wait... |

I liked the movie and thought it was good. One thing I did find interesting though was the reaction some people in the military seem to have had to the movie. I was surprised to see many one star reviews on Amazon for this movie which were almost all done by current or former soldiers. Basically their opinions were that the movie was completely unrealistic and many even felt the movie was disrespectful.

Anyone who did even half of what the main character did in the movie would have gotten themselves and their squad killed multiple times. It's not so-much a deux ex machinae {because God doesn't really show up} but it's kinda like having a character survive just because the writer decided that he would survive. Logan |

For example... Last year's Best Picture nominees: Slumdog Millionaire, Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader Last year's Best Director nominees: Slumdog Millionaire, Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader For the last 15 years, at least 4 of the Best Picture/Best Director nominees have been the same, and in many cases it was all 5. The exceptions tend to be when a foreign film gets worked into one of the categories (like Le scaphandre et le papillon, two years ago). Now with 10 nominees, if you think it deserved a Best Director nom, then it stands to reason that it'd easily get thrown into Best Picture as well. And many people think that the field of 10 can easily be narrowed down to the "real 5", by looking at the ones that also had nominations for directing (meaning An Education, The Blind Side, District 9, A Serious Man, and Up have no chance of winning).
