Default 'Mars Needs Moms' one of the biggest bombs ever.

Quote:
The motion-capture animated film cost $150 million to produce but earned only $6.9 million in its debut at the domestic box office, the 12th worst opening of all time for a movie released in more than 3,000 theaters and one of the lowest openings for a major studio 3D release.

The price tag doesn't include a hefty marketing spend. All told, Disney has likely invested $200 million or more in the motion capture pic, made by Robert Zemeckis' now-shuttered ImageMovers Digital.

Earth to Hollywood: gouging families on low quality 3D movies in a crowded marketplace is not a sustainable business plan.

Is anyone really suprised by this? You only needed to see the trailer to see how bad it is.

It's so sad that the man who gave us Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit has sunk this low to producing cr*p like this.

Lol. I was actually considering taking my kids to this. We'll wait for the BD.

He only produced it, it was directed by the man who gave us "An American Tail II", "We're Back!", and the "Time Machine" remake, the latter of which alone would be a lifetime of infamy.

(And it's only impressive a bomb in terms of money lost, although it's certainly the last nail in Zemeckis' already-dead coffin--
"Treasure Planet" had to face competition from 007, Harry Potter and other Disney movies...While "Delgo", which had the season all to itself, still holds the record at $0.7M.
And notice how the Miramax Factor is still at play: If audiences had gone to see it, we'd be whining about "Why does Zemeckis keep making movies?", but after it bombs, the headlines read "Disney's biggest bomb ever!" )

I know, but at the end of the day he was still one of the key figures behind the production, so my comment still makes sense.

Sadly, why do I think this will force the same man to expedite a Roger Rabbit II?

Finally, the death of mo-cap animation! No more dead eyes and digitized celebrities! Maybe Zemeckis will make a real movie again.

I was of course referring to 100% CGI movies like Polar Express, Beowulf, Mars Needs Moms, and Christmas Carol. What Jackson and Cameron have done with mo-cap is truly staggering.

Actually, Zyzzyx Road still holds the record at $30 (that is right $30 and not $30,000 or even $3,000 or $300; Zyzzyx Road, if I am not mistaken, cost $3,000,000 to make), followed by Finding Bliss at $9,000 (that is right, $9,000, not $90,000; Finding Bliss cost $1,800,000 to make) then Delgo at $700,000 (Delgo, if I am not mistaken, cost $70,000,000 to make).

I remember watching the documentary Cinema Europe and in the silent days the British government required theaters to show a certain percentage of British films (not unlike what Canada has for radio) and films would be shown to the cleaners and then discarded.

Whenever there's a big bomb over something awful like Mars Needs Moms, I just smile and think that maybe, just maybe, Jay Sherman is finally getting to people.

"If the movie stinks, just don't go!"

If you read the comments in the forum (and this one forum here doesn't have exclusive rights on such post) most movies now a days stink before they are even written. A simple mention that such and such actor and director will make such and such story and within 5 minutes you have 10 posts saying it will suck. People convince themselves months in advance that movies will stinks or in reverse and be epic, it's just how things are.

There's a difference between the two. I gaurentee Zyzzyx Road did not get a 50 million dollar marketing budget or even a wide release.

I think it's the timing of the release. Rango just came out and had a higher profile so most kids would want to see that. It will probably do better on home video.

I am honestly amazed John Lasseter let Disney release something that looked this horrible to theatres. This was clearly a STV release, Lasseter has done so well since he was put in charge of the animation at Disney, but I guess he gets a couple mistakes because of his golden background.

Finding Bliss also did not have a $50,000,000 marketing budget nor a wide release. Delgo, Mars Needs Moms, however had $50,000,000 or more marketing budgets and wide releases.

I saw it...Disney's best? No.
Bad movie? No, actually not bad.

I liked it enough for a $6 matinee.
