Default Where do you donate your time/money?

Anyone here into donations and/or charity work?

Recently, due to conversations with another member, I joined and am making donations to NPR.

I also donate blood on a regular basis, though last time the Red Cross messed up and I had a huge bruise on my arm for a while.

So what charities and other things are you involved in? This Thanksgiving I was thinking of handing out food instead of doing the traditional stuff.

My family does this thing called Feed the Hungry for my church. They go out once a month (other churches do it the other weeks of the month) and cook for the homeless/poor people to come and eat. They have clothes and things there too if they need it and they do a collection of food and money to buy more food once a month at our church for people and families who need it (like after Gustav and Katrina we helped out quite a bit of people around here).

I help them out when they need me there and some other things with my church too.

Disney is giving away free entrance to a park if you do a day's worth of charitable work with one of their approved charity organizations. It might be a good incentive to start.

I'm part of a neighborhood group where we help out those who need it through out the year. We bring dinners during the holidays and give gift cards to families who are in need.

We also try to keep the neighborhood clean and contact the correct persons if we have issues with shady people or just dangerous situations that need addressed.

As President of an Honor Society we do a fair amount of charity work, but most of it is seasonal.

Our most popular ones though have been the Las Americas Project: http://www.projectlasamericas.com/

And Better World Books:
http://www.betterworldbooks.com/

But if you are looking for a way to donate your time, and depending on your field of expertise, schools are often in need of people to judge at science fairs. I get emails all the time requesting judges.

Although two years ago I volunteered to help on christmas (24th), to give christmas food and small presents for the less fortunate.
But I had just meet my gf and I was (still am) insanely in love with her, I was up all night with her the night before and her mother couldn't wake me up, so I completely missed helping out
I felt like crap...

We tithe to our church.

My wife also does some community outreach stuff through her employer, which is a local (awesome) credit union.

I've been coaching and managing little league and soccer for the past three years, so that is my contribution for now. Helping kids is very rewarding, even if it's something on that level.

I donate platelets on a bi-weekly basis to the Red Cross and plasma once a month. Just started doing this a month or two ago, but I'd like to keep it up for as long as I can.

I don't do as much as I have in years past. I guess I am more selfish with my time and resources in my old age. When I replace electronics and some furniture items, I donate the old items to the Boy's and Girls Club or a local community center for gay youth. They loved my old foosball table. Each winter I like to purchase a new boys and a girls coat and give them to Catholic social services. That's also where I donate excess kitchen items when I do a culling of things that are overcrowding my cabinets. When we clean our closets of clothes we never wear, that goes to the Salvation Army. Nothing that could be used by someone with less than we have ever gets thrown away. Each Christmas my wife and I each adopt an angel off the tree at the nursing home we work at. That's about the extent of our contributions, other than donating to specific disaster relief funds as they occur. I think the ONLY thing I have ever asked for a receipt for, for tax deduction purposes, was the foosball table as it was a nice one that was barely used and I probably could have sold it for a couple of hundred dollars at least.

My family tithes to various Christian churches. But what is easy and free is being kind and civil to strangers you meet. The increasing populations in most urban areas has made us all strangers in most public venues, and humans are a disagreeable lot when they think their outward actions have no long-term consequences to them personally.

Be nice and handle yourself with dignity in public spaces. It is the gift that helps everyone get along.

My time and money to the two local children hospital. Montreal Childrens Hospital and Sainte Justine.

Can't accept sick children, children are suppose to have fun running and laughing. So if a bit of my money can help and a bit of my time can make them feel better for a little while, I am there.
