Default Rear speakers are crackly.

Alright.. well yesterday I posted a thread on getting more out of my surrounds and I used the calibration mic and what not.

But now I got my brackets and hooked them up, and they sound really crackly. I had like 14awg wire connected to the what I believe is 10 coming out of the wall from when my dad built the basement. However, now I have the brackets.. I am just using the raw 10awg. However, it doesn't fit into the Sony speakers so I separated a little bit of it, and just wrapped it around so it would fit in.

Would upgrading speakers make a difference or what? I have an STR-DG820 receiver that does DTS Master, TrueHD, and whatever so I doubt that is the issue..

These speakers are pretty old to be honest, and I believe came in a HTiB and I believe are 6ohms as most HTiB are?

Any advice is helpful..

-Dave

Oh, also.. when I have the volume off or even on.. I get a humming or buzz out of all my speakers. Any tips on getting rid of that?

It may be due to bad power, my only suggestion is to buy a power conditioner.

About the buzzing, do you get that when the system is off or in standby, or do you just mean you get it when the system is on but the volume is turned down?

Not in standby. Only on. Happens with RCA from the satellite box and HDMI from the PS3..

Try hooking up your surround speakers in place of your mains and see if the crackling is still there. Don't worry about running the auto setup or anything like that. We just want to see if the crackling moves with the speakers.

yo probably need to check your lines or move the speakers around to see if its the speaker or speaker wire.

What kind of noise is it, buzzing, or static? Does it do it when the receiver is turned off, just when the volume is low, or all the time (No matter the volume)?

My guess is bad connections or bad power.

Well the wire going to the center, and two towers are different from the surrounds as that wire has been in the wall for a while.

It's more of a static. And it does it only when the receiver is on and does it when the volume is all the way off or even up a little. Granted, it's not as noticeable when the volume is up obviously, but it's still there.

Have you tried swapping them out for the fronts yet?

The humming or buzz sounds to me like what I had ... which is a ground loop issue. Lots of ways to resolve this. My suggestion is to totally disconnect the cable box or coax cable from the TV and see if you still get the humming or buzzing sound. Usually 9 times out of 10 its due to the coax cable line not be grounded. Also, make sure they aren't touching speaker wire or HDMI cable. This goes for any power cables as well. The speaker cable needs to be isolated from COAX and Power cables.

The crackling to me sounds like either feedback due to faulty cabling or hookup or blown speakers. If you can take the grill off the front of the speaker and visual inspect the integrity of the speaker and its ok then chances are its something wrong with the hookup or cable.

I have the HDMI and other cables going through one slot in the stand I have, and the speaker wire out another.

To test the theory I have about whether your COAX (TV) Cable is the cause, try to disconnect it from the cable box and TV. So that your cable is not causing any interference or ground loop with your HDMI and/or speaker wire. Once that is done, start up the receiver and listen for the humming sound. If gone, you know this was the problem. But it could be caused by something else.

I have the coax out of the wall, then into my satellite box. After that it's just RCA into the receiver and then out. Still unplugged the coax and nothing changed still a staticy like humming noise.

Ok, well if its not he coax and you made sure the satellite box is totally off (power plug pulled), you now need to try some trial and error.

I would make sure everything but your receiver and speakers are wired up and everything else is powered down and off. Power plugs pulled. Then test to see if your getting the static hum noise. If you still are, then you know its either your speakers, wiring or receiver. If not its one of your other components. Then go from there.
