Default Movies that changed their name after release?

I recently bought Live Die Repeat/Edge of Tomorrow and they really want you to know the film is now called Live Die Repeat.
Blu Ray cover..

Original movie poster

What other movies have done this? i know movies sometimes have different names in diferent countries but i haven't really seen this done before like this.

Is this because they want to make it a series, i know there was talk of a sequel, like how Raiders of the Lost Ark is now called Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The most recent Mission Impossible had the Part 1 removed from the title.

That's not as egregious though, but interesting, is there a reason they did that?

Because the movie was not a massive hit, so wanted a refresh kind of like when comics do a new number 1 issue.

Ahhh i hadn't paid attention to that one, that kinda makes sense with how long the original title was. I really like the original title of Edge of Tomorrow, Live Die Repeat sounds really generic in comparison, or the Japanese title `All You Need Is Kill`

Marketing has changed, but the titles have not changed.

Sources bluray.com and IMDB:

Edge of Tomorrow is the name. "Live, Die, Repeat" has always been the tagline.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is still the name. The Indiana Jones part was added to bring it in line with all the sequels, but is not a name change.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is still listed as the title.

On the spine of the Blu Ray it says... Live.Die.Repeat/Edge of Tomorrow , you don't usually put the tagline on the spine, and they put it first as well so...

Does this count?

Released as Delusion in 1981

The title was changed for it's 1982 re-release to The House Where Death Lives

Yeah that would count, although usually it works the other way where they shorten the title to one word instead of changing it to 5.

I thought of another one, Reindeer Games, the Ben Affleck Christmas movie with Charlize Theron, they changed the name to Deception because no one outside of the USA knows what Reindeer Games are, it's one of those movies where they say the title in the movie. At one point Gary Sinise says "Don't play your Reindeer Games with me!"

Very interesting thread. I know this is about movies that were already released then had the title changed but one that was changed very shortly before release was Revenge of the Jedi being changed to Return of the Jedi. I am sure most people are aware of the famous Revenge of the Jedi poster but quickly changed because they decided the Jedi didn’t seek revenge. Yes, I know this is not what you were looking for but it’s such a big example of a famous name change.

Edge of Tomorrow is an example of how to totally screw up your marketing campaign. The movie's title has always been Edge of Tomorrow and Live, Die, Repeat is the tagline. I think this was really obvious when it first came out at the theater. It was pretty well received critically, but underperformed at the box office. For video, they wanted to play up the Live, Die, Repeat line more to emphasis the movie's gimmick and it often ended up making that look like the title (witness the DVD cover). Retailers, just as confused as customers, listed it several ways and in the end all they did was make its home release underperform as well. For the record, its a great movie and its even better in 3D. One of Tom's best efforts, and Emily is in peak form.

Didn’t they try to change a few different titles recently in Fandango after opening weekend to try and boost poor sales?

I Wanna Dance With Somebody became Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn became Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey

And my favorite:

Gran Turismo later became Gran Turismo: Based On A True Story

Probably the most famous one: Star Wars becoming Star Wars Episode IV- A New Hope.

Also in the tagline marketing title change: X2 becoming X2: X-Men United and Ghostbusters from 2016 becoming Ghostbusters: Answer the Call

A military-cadet comedy film from 1994 that starred Danny DeVito was originally released under the title Renaissance Man, but when it fared poorly they attempted a title change of By The Book. In Australia, it is known as Army Intelligence.
